Buttonhole sewing -machines.- Meaus are provided, operative at the end of a sewing operation, for pulling back the protruding end of the cord so that it will be no longer than required to be safely bound by the initial stitches in the succeeding buttonliole. The invention is described as applied to an eyelet end bottonhole sewing- machine of substantially known construction, having stitch-forming mechanism as described in Specification 179,278, work holder and buttunhole cutting mechanisms as described in Specifications 183,873, 184,134, 184,135, under thread and cord cutter mechanism as described in Specification 223,124 and actuating mechanism for the scissors carrying lever as described in Specifications 223,801, 224,845, and 226,134. After the sewing operation has been completed and the rapid-feed shaft 24, Fig. 1 has brought the work from the sewing position to the buttonhole cutting position shown in Fig. 4, and finally to the starting position shown in Fig. 6. with the cord nipper-jaw 57 directly over the jaw 59, a cam portion 53<a> on a gear 25 on the rapid feed shaft 24, meshing with the feed wheel 23, effects the quick advance and closure of the scissor members 41. to cut the under-thread and cord c close to the button hole. The buttonhole cutting mechanism is then tripped, and during the advance of the fulcrum block 35, which carries the buttonhole cutters 32, 33 the jaws 57, 59 are closed upon the cord, Fig 8, by the engagement of a roll 62 on a bar 63 carried by the block 35 with a cam rise 64 on a rearward extension of the jaw 59. The bar 63 is formed at its forward end with a finger 65 and shoulder 66, and this finger passes under the cord, during the advance of the buttonhole cutters, between the cord guide 56 and needle throat member 12<a>, the shoulder engaging the cord and pulling back a measured length through the cord delivery aperture in the needle throat member.
