Abstract
261,458. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., Ricks, F., and Richards, A. E. Aug. 12, 1925. Reciprocating-punch machines.-In machines for operating upon the margins of sheet material such as leather, and more particularly the toe tip of a boot or shoe, the leather blank is held within a carrier which presents it before mechanisms arranged successively to skive, shrink, turn, and perforate the edge, any one of these operations being omitted if necessary. In one arrangement the blank is put into a carrier at a feeding station and the carrier is fed automatically to the first operating station, whereupon the carrier - feed is automatically disconnected and the blank is fed along by mechanism. associated with the tool-operating mechanism, after which the carrier feed again becomes operative and feeds the blank to the next tool. As shown in Figs. 1, 8, and 10, A indicates the skiving and shrinking station, B tha perforating station, and E the table at which blanks are introduced and removed from the carriers, the feed being intermittent. The perforating mechanism comprises a group of tubular punches on a block 69, Figs. 1 and 8, supported by a crosshead 75. A vertically reciprocable plunger 71 with a flat face is mounted on a stem 73 within the crosshead, which is adapted to slide transversely upon horizontal rods 77, so that after the plunger descends to perforate the blank the crosshead moves transversely, carrying the blank forward with it, after which the plunger rises and the crosshead and its appendant parts are moved rearwardly to their original positions. A resilient stripping member 79 strips the blank from the punches when the plunger rises, slots being provided in the stripper to allow the punches to pass up therethrough. During the rearward movement of the crosshead the blank is held against movement relatively to its carrier by a presser foot 81 which descends upon the clamp 127 holding the blank. The carriers, of which two are shown in Fig. 10, comprise a base plate 125 and a cooperating spring-urged clamping plate 127 mounted upon the ends of stems 143, 163. The stem 143 is adjustably secured in a split collar 145, Fig. 12, at the upper end of a sleeve 149 which is rotatable upon a vertical spindle 89. A disc 151 integral with the lower end of the sleeve carries a pivoted pawl 155 with a tooth which is adapted to engage one of the teeth on the upper face of a constantly rotating pulley 93. Similarly the stem 163 of the carrier D is mounted upon an outer. sleeve 169, the lower end of which carries a block pivotally supporting a pawl 175 which has a tooth 177 for engagement with the pulley 93. At the skiving and shrinking station and at the perforating station the carriers are disengaged from the pulley 93 by fixed vertical cam plates 179 and 189 respectively, upon which the ends of the pivoted pawl-carrying arms ride while the blank is being operated upon, the blanks being then fed by the mechanisms associated with the tools. The carrier feed is also disengaged at the work table E by means of a hinged cam plate 161 mounted upon a horizontal pivot 191 and controlled by a treadle, so that when it is in the vertical position the feeding pawls are disengaged and a finished blank can be removed from the clamp and a new blank inserted. The treadle is depressed to lower the cam plate to permit the carrier to proceed. The horizontal work table E is mounted upon a bracket 109 which is adjustable vertically upon a base plate 91. The work table comprises a wooden portion 113 with slots to receive securing bolts to provide horizontal adjustment upon the bracket 109, and a central metal portion 117 carrying an adjustable edge gauge 119 for the blank.
