Abstract

260,190. Mond, A. L., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 22, 1926. Bleaching, processes and materials for. - In bleaching by means of aqueous solutions of hypochlorites, nickel in the form of the metal or of its oxides or salts is employed as a catalyst. In place of nickel, metals other than those forming oxides soluble in caustic alkali may be used, e.g. copper and cobalt. The hypachlorite bath may be brought into contact with the nickel either in the presence or absence of the material to be bleached. When bleaching cellulose nickel impellers may be used or nickel plates suspended in the liquid or nickel salts to an extent corresponding to the presence of less than 0.5 per cent of nickel for a given amount of material to be bleached may be added. The efficiency of the process may be increased by the addition of hydroxyl ions which may be effected by increasing the alkalinitv of the bath. The favourable limits of temperature are 0‹ and 60‹. C. The discolouration of the material by black nickel oxide compounds may be removed by dilute acids or acid salts such as bisulphit'es or by continuing the reaction until the complete consumption of the hypochlorite.
