Abstract

260,026. Salerni, P. M. July 16, 1925. Hardening. -In a process for hardening steel articles in which the articles are kept in position in the heating furnace by a magnetic field and released by loss of magnetic properties at or about the point of decalescence, the articles E are retained by a laminated core B surrounded by a solenoid A mounted in a casing a provided with an inlet a<2> and an outlet a<3> for cooling liquid. The end of the core B passes through the fireclay roof c of a furnace C having a quartz tube D surrounded by a heating coil d and when the articles E are released they drop into a quenching bath F. In a modification, Fig. 2, the article E is supported by a pivoted tray G close to the core B, a part of the weight of the article being counterbalanced by a weight g<1> carried by an arm g<2> mounted on the pivot g of the tray. When the article is released by the core B it may be retained in the heating enclosure, before dropping into the quenching bath, for any predetermined period by an ordinary electric or other device. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 15809/05, 131,575, 150,486, and 205,037.
