Abstract

Exhaust-silencers. - A silencer comprises a chamber 3 into which a mixture of exhaust gas and water enters tangentially in order to cause the rotation of the gases, which escape through slots 7 into a coaxial outlet chamber 6 projecting beyond the ends of the chamber 3 and having outlets 8 for exhaust and 9 for water. As shown, the exhaust gases are admitted to the chamber 3 from a chamber 1 through a conduit 2 provided with a transverse water pipe 4 having a number of small perforations for spraying the water. The conduit 2 is narrowed to a slot 5 where it enters the chamber 3. The chamber 1 may be provided with a cut-out consisting of an adjustable ring 10 with openings 11 adapted to register with similar openings in the wall of the chamber. The slits 7 in the chamber 6 may have their edges bent over in order to divert the exhaust bases into the chamber.
