Abstract

An aid to drivers to help them remember which side of the road to drive on, when they are in a country where the normal practice is to drive on the opposite side, is the attachment of a brightly contrasting coloured visual alert 2 on the steering wheel 1 in the centre of the driver’s vision, which will prompt the driver to the appropriate side of the road. It can be removed when it is no longer required. It will be placed so not to interfere with the operation of the steering wheel.

Description

Visual Driving Aid This invention is an aid to drivers to help them remember which side of the road to drive on, when they are in a country where the normal practise is to drive on the opposite side.
This invention is the attachment of a brightly contrasting coloured visual alert on the steering wheel in the centre of the driver's vision, which will prompt the driver to the appropriate side of the road. The alert can be removed when it is no longer required. The Alert will be placed so not to interfere with the operation of the steering wheel.
When drivers are required to drive on the opposite side of the road that they are used to using they can forget to do so when distracted or tired. This is more likely to happen when people first visit a new country, as a result serious accident, including a fatality, can occur.
Conventional reminders are usually applied to the windscreen. To prevent them significantly blocking the drivers view they are made of semi-transparent material, this limits their ability to command attention.
The alert will consist of words and a symbol and can be varied to suit different languages.
The invention is illustrated in a simple example, Figure 1. The Steering Wheel Alert 2 is shown positioned on the steering wheel 1.

  1. Claims 1. A visual reminder to drive on the appropriate side of the road.
  2. 2. A visual reminder according to claim 1 that because of its placement position on the steering wheel will be more prominent than conventional reminders.
  3. 3. A visual reminder according to claim 1 that because it will be in bright contrasting colours it will be more conspicuous than conventional reminders.
