Description

A GOLF SWING AID
The present invention relates to a golf swing aid. In particular the invention relates to an aid for perfecting a golf swing in the form of a glove worn by the user during the swing.
Background to the invention
When it comes to golf swing and instruction, one of the most overlooked areas of focus is the takeaway.
The takeaway takes place immediately as the golf swing begins and ends when the club is parallel to the ground, at which point the backswing begins. The first 15 few moments of the swing during the takeaway will inevitably have consequences on every swing sequence that follows.
The present invention provides an aid for perfecting the grip and takeaway of a golf swing, in the form of a glove that has clear visual indicators printed thereon that assist the wearer in perfecting their hand grip and movement during the takeaway.
Statement of invention
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a training aid in the form of a glove having a surface on its dorsum aspect divided into two discrete sections, the first section having a surface decoration visually different to the second section; wherein the first section extends from the base of the interdigital space of the third and fourth finger to the proximity of the pisiform.
Preferably the second section includes a visible mark extending from the anatomical snuffbox towards the first metacarpophalangeal joint.
Preferably the first and second sections have visually distinct colourations.
Preferably, the surface of the first section has a print or dye of a darker colour than the second section.
Preferably, first and second seconds are divided by a seam extending downwardly to meet a collar of the glove Preferably, the first section extends over the fourth and fifth finger of the glove.
Preferably, the second section extends of the thumb and the second and third fingers of the glove.
Preferably, the second section includes a visible mark extending from the anatomical snuffbox towards the first metacarpophalangeal joint.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a training aid in the form of a glove having a surface on its palmar aspect divided into two discrete sections, the first section having a surface decoration visually different to the second section; wherein the first section extends from the base of the interdigital space of the second and third finger towards the hypothenar eminence.
Preferably, the first and second sections are separated by a dividing line.
Preferably, the first section extends over the third, fourth and fifth fingers of the glove.
Preferably, the second section extends of the thumb and the second finger of the glove.
According to a third aspect there is provided a training aid in the form of a glove having a surface on the dorsum aspect according to the first aspect and a surface on the palmar aspect according to the second aspect According to a fourth aspect there is provided a golf training aid in the form of a glove having a surface divided into four sections, wherein: first and second sections are provided on dorsum side of the glove; third and fourth sections are provided on the palmar side of the glove; said first and third sections carry a first colour; said second and fourth sections carry a second colour, visually different to the first colour; and said second and third sections extending over three fingers of the hand, including the middle finger.
Brief description of the drawings
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures in which: Figure 1 is an illustration of the dorsum aspect of a golf glove constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is an illustration of the palmar aspect of the golf glove of figure 1; Figure 3 shows a further training device for use with the golf glove of figure 1; and Figure 4 shows the training device secured to the glove.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Figures 1 and 2 show the dorsum and palmar aspects respectively of a golf glove 2 according to the invention.
Whilst the embodiment described is a glove, the locations of the features marked on the glove 2 are discussed with reference to anatomical hand features to ease of understanding.
The specific embodiment described is for the right hand of a left-handed golfer but could be equally to the left hand of a right-handed golfer.
The glove 2 is made from any suitable material known for use with golf gloves Preferably, the dorsum aspect of the glove 2 is made from a mesh chosen from environmentally friendly (and preferably still, vegan friendly) material. The part of the glove 2 covering the thumb area may be made from an ethically sourced soft leather that may be environmentally and/or vegan friendly.
Referring first to figure 1, the dorsum aspect (back of the hand) of the glove 2 includes a securing tab 4 which is pulled across and secured to the main glove body by VelcroTM or similar releasable fixing means. The tab 4 includes a magnetic marker disc 6 that may provide a convenient location for branding.
The surface of the glove 2 is divided into two visually distinct sections 8, 10. In the embodiment described the visually distinction is provide through colouration. Both sections 8, 10 may coloured differently, or only one section may be coloured to make it visually distinct from the other.
In the embodiment shown, one section 8 is printed or dyed with a dark colour (blue for example) and the other section 10 is printed or dyed with a white colour.
Although colouration is used for to make the sections 8, 10 visually distinct, other forms of surface decoration could be adopted, for example, visually distinct patterns or even different branding elements.
The sections 8, 10 are divided by a seam 12 extending from the base of the interdigital space of the third and fourth finger 14 downwardly towards the ulnar prominence to the proximity of the pisiform, to meet a collar 18 of the glove 2.
S
As can be seen in figure 1, the first section 8 extends over the fourth ("ring") finger 18 and the fifth (baby') finger 20 of the glove 2. The third ("middle") finger 22, second ("index") finger 24 and thumb 26 are within the second white, or lighter, section 10.
The base of the tab 4 is aligned with the seam 12 so not to obscure the differentiation between the colours.
A line marking 28 is provided in the second section 10 extending upwardly from 10 the generally proximity of the anatomical snuffbox towards the first metacarpophalangeal joint.
The purpose of the markings on the dorsum aspect of the glove 2 are to provide visual indicators to help perfect the takeaway of a golf swing. During the takeaway the darker colour of the first section 8 should not be, or become, visible to the wearer, ensuring the there is no rotation of the hand during this phase. During such time the marking 28 should remain visually in line with the golf club grip.
Figure 2 shows the opposing side or palmar aspect of the glove 2. This side of the glove 2 is similarly divided into two sections 30, 32 of contrasting colour, or which are otherwise visually distinct as previously described.
The sections 30, 32 are separated by dividing line 34 extending from the base of the interdigital space of the second 24 and third finger 22 towards the hypothenar eminence of the hand, to the proximity of the skin fold aligned with the fifth metacarpal phalangeal joint and meeting the top of the seam 36 extending towards the centre of palm before curving back towards the side of the hand.
As can be seen in figure 2, the third section 30 extends over the fifth finger 20 fourth finger 18 and third finger 22. The second finger 24 and thumb 26 are within the fourth white section 32.
In order to remain to maintain the same natural texture and grip across the entire palmar aspect of the glove 2, the dividing line 34 is formed through use of different coloured dye or print on the glove 2, either side of the dividing line 34.
The purpose of the markings on the dorsum aspect of the glove 2 are to provide a visual indicator to help perfect the grip of a golf club prior to the takeaway. To this end, the golf club is gripped in such a way that the grip of the golf club is aligned with the dividing line 34 between the third and fourth sections 30, 32.
A further training device that can be used in conjunction with the glove 2 is shown in figures 3 and 4. The training device takes the form of a generally triangular fin element 36 made from rigid or semi rigid material.
The fin 36 has a length of typically 14.5 cm. and tapers from a width of approximately 7.5 cm tapering to a width of approximately 3 cm. The fin 36 has a thickness of approximately 2 mm. The wide end 38 of the fin 36 has an elongate closed slot 40 extending across the width of the fin 36.
As can be seen in figure 4, the fin 26 can be attached to the dorsum aspect of the glove 2 by extending the tab 4 through the slot 40 before securing the end of the tab 4 to the glove 2. The fin 26 includes a magnet (not shown) secured to its surface which engages with the magnetic marker disc 6 of the glove to retain the fin 26 against and parallel to the back of the left hand.
The fin 6 may be releasably attached to the glove 2 by other known means such as for example VelcroTM.
When the fin 36 is secured to the glove 2, the angle of attachment is such that the fin 36 provides the user with a visual indication of the direction of the takeway. The fin 36 also shows the user a visual indication of the takeway, the top of the backswing and the impact position thereby providing a critical analysis of their swing in their pursuit for perfection.
