Description

The present inventive concept relates to a device for projecting or expelling an object or substance from a storage vessel, when the device is triggered. The present inventive concept is envisaged to be a development in the field of novelty devices such as crackers, party cannons, table bombs and the like, it may find use in neighbouring or related fields.
Summary of invention
The present inventive concept provides a device comprising a base portion, a top portion and a compressible and extensible portion, wherein the base portion and top portion are each connected to the compressible and extensible portion at substantially one respective end thereof, and wherein the device comprises a locking means which when engaged is adapted to hold the base portion and top portion substantially in position relative to each other.
The terms base and top are used herein for convenience to describe a relative orientation of the portions. The skilled reader will appreciate that the device may be used in a wide range of orientations without affecting the function of the device. For example, the device may be used in an orientation in which the top and base portions
- 2 are in a substantially horizontal plane or a vertical plane or some other orientation between the horizontal and vertical.
The base portion, top portion and compressible and extensible portion substantially share a common axis.
In a first state, the compressible and extensible portion is in a compressed state and the locking means is engaged so that the base portion and top portion are held in position relative to each other.
In a second state, the locking means is released so that the base portion and top portion are free to move relative to each other. Thus, the compressible and extensible portion is in a free state and thus able to move the base portion and top portion substantially along the common axis. For example, in this second state if the compressible and extensible portion has some stored energy it will generally act to separate the base portion and top portion until that stored energy has been dissipated.
The locking means may comprise a slot formed in each of the base portion and the top portion and a corresponding tab adapted to be inserted into each slot. When the slot of each of the base portion and top portion are aligned, the tab may be inserted into both slots, the tab subsequently holding the base portion and top portion in position relative to each other. Removal of the tab from the slots releases the locking means so that the base portion and top portion may move relative to one another along the common axis.
The top portion may comprise a platform surface, which faces substantially outwardly away from the base portion.
Thus, an object or substance arranged on the platform surface when the device is in the first state would be projected by movement of the platform surface by extension of the compressible and extensible portion when the locking means is released.
The compressible and extensible portion may be a spring. Alternatively, the compressible and extensible portion may be a piston or the like.
The top portion may further comprise a wall portion arranged around substantially an outer edge of the top portion, and extending substantially outwardly away from the base portion and substantially perpendicular to the platform surface. The platform
- 3 surface and wall portion may thus form a cup-type arrangement which may act as a storage vessel for an object or substance.
One of the base portion or top portion may comprise an extension portion extending therefrom substantially towards the other of those portions. Such an extension portion may provide for a displacement between the platform surface and the base portion. The respective portion of the locking means may be arranged on such an extension portion. Alternatively or in addition, the respective portion not comprising an extension portion may have a recess formed within it, to receive the extension portion. The locking means may be arranged in the region in which the extension portion is received within the recess, when the base portion and top portion are in the first state, i.e. have been brought together.
The extension portion may comprise an elongate portion. In the case that the compressible and extensible portion is a spring, the elongate portion may be disposed substantially within and substantially co-axially with the spring. Thus, the elongate portion may provide a guide with the aim of minimising any non-co-axial relative movement of the base and top portions during an extension movement. Such minimising of non-co-axial movement is desirable as non-co-axial movement may impede smooth co-axial movement if the device is arranged a in confined space, for example.
The tab may comprise a substantially elongate portion of substantially uniform crosssection. Thus the tab may be inserted into the said slots when the slots are substantially similar in size and shape to one another.
The tab may further comprise an engagement portion adapted to engage with another element. Thus, such an element may withdraw the tab from the slots.
The base portion and/or top portion may comprise a second slot. Thus there may be an arrangement in which there are three slots into which the tab may be inserted. If one of two slots of either the base or top portion are arranged at either side of a single slot of the other of those portions that may provide for a more symmetrical locking means. A more symmetrical locking means is preferred as it aims to minimise any non-co-axial relative movement of the base and top portions during an extension movement.
- 4The locking means may alternatively comprise an annular portion connected to either the base portion or the top portion, the annular portion having at least one notch formed within it. The other of the base or top portion may be connected to a corresponding tab. The annular portion and the tab are moveable relative to one another around substantially a common axis. Thus, if the annular portion and tab are rotated around a common axis and the tab reaches the at least one notch, the annular portion no longer resists a relative movement along the said common axis. Thus the locking means can be released by a rotation or twist of the base portion and top portion, so that the base portion and top portion may move relative to one another co-axially.
The tab may form part of a disc. In other words, the tab may be a portion of a disc having a larger diameter than other portions of the disc.
One envisaged arrangement is that the annular portion comprises a series of notches distributed substantially equally spaced around its circumference and the disc comprises a series of tabs distributed substantially equally spaced around its circumference. Such an arrangement could alternatively be described as a series of corresponding crenellations formed within each of the disc and the annular portion.
Thus, a relatively small rotation of the disc relative to the annular portion would enable the locking means to be released.
Either the disc or the annular portion may be provided with an engagement portion to engage with another element.
The locking means may alternatively comprise a claw portion pivotable between an engaged position and a released position.
In the above-mentioned first state, the claw portion is in an engaged position to hold the base portion and top portion in position relative to each other. When the locking means is to be released, the claw portion can be rotated around its pivot to disengage the base portion from the top portion as described above.
The locking means may further comprise an engagement portion adapted to engage with another element. A suitable such other element may be part of a triggering means.
- 5 The device may be substantially arranged within a housing. The housing may comprise a tubular portion.
At least one element of the triggering means may be outside the housing. Thus, a user may take an action outside the housing which triggers release of the locking means.
The triggering means may comprise a handle formed integrally with the engagement portion, extending through an opening within the housing. Alternatively, the triggering means may comprise a string extending through an opening within the housing, attached at substantially one end to the engagement portion.
Further more complex triggering means are envisaged, such as a pull-string which a user pulls to extend, and which then retracts under the action of a spring or clockwork or the like, triggering the release of the locking mechanism when the pull-string returns to its starting (i.e. retracted) position.
Detailed description of the invention
Exemplary embodiments of the present inventive concept will now be described in further detail with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a device of the present inventive concept in a first stage of use;
Figure 2 shows the same device as in Figure 1 at a second, later, stage of use;
Figure 3 shows the same device as in Figures 1 and 2 at a third, later stage of use;
Figure 4 shows parts of an embodiment of a device of the present inventive concept in a released state;
Figure 5 shows some of the same parts as in Figure 4, in a compressed state; and
Figure 6 shows a perspective view of a base portion of the same device as in Figures 4 and 5.
- 6 Turning to Figures 1 to 3, a device 10 has a housing 12 which surrounds a base portion 14, a top portion 16 and a spring 18. The top portion 16 has an extension portion 28 which extends downwards towards the base portion 14. To aid clarity the extension portion 28 has not been labelled in Figures 1 and 2, but the skilled reader will appreciate that it is present in those Figures.
The device 10 is shown as resting on a surface, and the skilled reader will appreciate that the surface is not an essential part of the inventive concept as described. Top portion 16 is shown in Figures 1 to 3 figuratively as a circle, and the skilled reader will appreciate that in practice the top portion 16 will be a solid piece, having platform surface facing upwards in the orientation shown in these drawings. A ring 20 is connected to a string 22, which is in turn connected to a trigger mechanism (not shown) which is arranged within the base portion 14.
In Figures 1 and 2, the spring 18 is compressed so that the top portion 16 is held in position within the housing 12. An object 26 sits on the platform of the top portion 16.
In use, a user may pull the ring 20 away from the base portion 14 in the direction shown by the arrow in Figure 1, extending the string 22 from within the base portion 14. Once released by the user - as shown in Figure 2- the string 22 starts to retract back into the base portion 14, drawing the ring 20 back towards the base portion 14. When the ring 22 is fully retracted back to the base portion 14 so that the string 22 is fully enclosed by the base portion 14 - as shown in Figure 3. In Figure 3, the trigger mechanism (not shown) has released a locking mechanism (also not shown) within the base portion 14. Thus, the top portion 16 is no longer held in position within the housing 12, allowing energy stored by the spring 18 to be released, so extend the spring 18 which in turn lifts the top portion 16 in the direction shown by the arrow in Figure 3. Thus, the object 26 is expelled upward from the housing.
In Figure 4, parts of an exemplary device 10 are shown. Atop portion 16 has an extension portion 28 extending towards a base portion 14. Within the extension portion 28 is formed a slot 30. The base portion 14 has a recess 32 formed within it, which is sized to receive the extension portion 28. Connecting the base portion 14 and the top portion 16 and substantially co-axial with those portions is a spring 18. The base portion 14 has a slot formed within it (not shown in this Figure). Tab 34 can be inserted into slot 30 as
-7well as the slot formed within the base portion 14. Thus, the base portion 14 and top portion 16 can be brought together to compress the spring 18, and the tab 34 can be inserted into the slots of the respective base portion 14 and top portion 16 to hold those portions in place in respect to one another. The tab 34 has a handle 36.
In Figure 5, the parts shown in Figure 4 have been brought together so that the extension portion 28 of the top portion 16 is arranged within the recess (not shown in this Figure) of the base portion 14. The spring 18 is compressed and the tab (not shown in this Figure) has been inserted into the slots of the base portion 14 and top portion 16 to hold them together as shown. Handle 36 of the tab can be used to withdraw the tab to 10 release the portions from each other.
Figure 6 shows a base portion 14 which has a recess 32 formed within it, which is sized to accept part of an extension portion 28 of a top portion 16. The base portion 14 has a slot 38 formed within it. Tab 34 has been inserted into slot 38 of the base portion 16 and a corresponding slot (not shown in this Figure) of the top portion 16. Handle 36 of 15 the tab 34 can be used to withdraw the tab to release the portions from each other.
