Abstract

257,318. Bentley, H., and Bentley, J. N. May 21, 1925. Manhole covers.-A manhole or inspection cover 1 is secured by one or more turnbuttons or studs 7 each having two lateral projections 10, 11, the projection 10 engaging the lower inclined surface of a lug 5 on the frame to lock the cover, and the other projection 11 engaging the upper inclined surface of the lug to raise the cover from its seat when the stud 7 is turned for unlocking. In the locking position shown, the projection 11 bears against the underside of the cover to support the stud 7 against bending. The rotation of the stud is limited by a stop on the cover or frame. The cover bears against a rubber or like packing ring 12 and is prevented from turning by the engagement of a projection on the frame with a recess in the cover.
