Emulsions, making.-In a process and device for mixing liquids or fused materials for the purpose of carrying out reactions or producing dispersion systems, the material or materials constituting the disperse phase are atomized in known manner by a vapour or gas under pressure and are then forced through a sheet of a continuously supplied dispersion medium to obtain therewith a very intimate mixture. The material constituting the disperse phase enters a chamber h through an inlet i and is blown by steam from a nozzle g<1> through an aperture, in the wall of the chamber where it encounters a sheet of dispersion medium, the medium having been supplied continuously to a jacket k up which it flows to pass down a conical tube n within the jacket. The jacket serves to cool the mixture as it is discharged and the degree of mixture is increased by the friction between the mixture and the wall of the conical tube n. A small quantity of the dispersion medium may be initially mixed with or atomized with the disperse phase; in the latter case, two appliances such as that shown are used in series. The process is stated to be applicable to the preparation of emulsions of bitumens and pitches, and to the purification or saponification of oils by the intimate mixture therewith of purifying or saponifying agents. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the device shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled). The dispersion medium is supplied continuously to the chamber d and the disperse phase is blown through it from the nozzle a, the mixture flowing away through a conical mouth f. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
