Abstract
257,256. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Aug. 20, 1925, [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils, extracting.-Carbonaceous materials are treated with gases containing hydrogen and oxides of carbon or water vapour under high pressure and temperature in the presence of a contact mass capable of forming methanol by the catalytic hydrogenation of oxides of carbon. Benzines, other liquid hydrocarbons, and methanol and higher oxygencontaining organic compounds are obtained. The materials may be preliminarily hydrogenated by hydrogen or mixtures thereof with carbon monoxide. Suitable contact masses are described in Specifications 229,714, 229,715. 237,030, and 254,760, [all in Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], and include vanadic acid, manganese oxide, uranium oxide, titanic acid, chromic acid, zinc oxide, or mixtures of zinc oxide with any of the above or with lead oxide. Carbonaceous materials specified as suitable are coal, lignite, peat, wood, animal or vegetable matter, tars, distillation residues or products, mineral oils, asphalts, bitumen, schist oils, ozokerite, and resinous bodies. In an example, brown coal producer tar vapours are passed with a mixture of 10 per cent carbon monoxide and 90 per cent hydrogen at 200 atmospheres pressure and 450‹ C. over a contact mass of 90 parts zinc oxide and 10 parts chromic acid. The product contains 30 per cent of benzine, besides methanol and other higher oxygen-containing organic compounds, and is stated to be suitable as fuels for internal-combustion engines.
