Abstract
255,908. Standard Development Co., (Assignees of Becker, A. E., and Boehm, A. B.). July 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Impregnating; tanning with special chemicals. -A. composition for the treatment of leather after tanning &c., or as a leather belt dressing consists of a mineral oil of lubricating grade containing a substantial amount (from 5 to 30 per cent) of oil-soluble sulphonate residue from the acid treatment of petroleum, with or without a saponified organic oil. Fatty material may also be present. The oil-soluble sulphonate may be prepared in the usual way by alcohol extraction of mineral oil which has been treated with acid and neutralized with alkali. If the sulphonate contains free alkali, sufficient cod oil, or other saponifiable organic oil, to neutralize the alkali is added, producing a soap. A typical composition contains 90 per cent of mineral oil, 8.5 per cent of sodium sulphonate, and 1.5 per cent of cod oil soap. In making the composition, the sodium sulphonate is added to the mineral oil, heating and stirring being usually necessary. If residual alkali is to be neutralized, cod oil or other saponifiable organic oil is added, and the mixture is heated and stirred and allowed to cool and settle. Additional cod oil or other fatty material such as olive oil, neats foot oil, sperm oil, tallow or mixtures of these may be added. The composition may be made into an emulsion with water, and used alone or with a proportion of animal or fish oil.
