Abstract

255,894. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Moss, S. A.). July 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Motor power plant; regulating. - T h e speed of a supercharging pump of an internal - combustion engine is regulated by varying the area of the passage of exhaust gas through a turbine driving the pump. The pump shaft 10 is driven by a turbine comprising a rotor 12 having a ring of buckets 13 which are supplied with exhaust gas through a pipe 22 and nozzles 25, the exhaust leaving by a pipe 23. The nozzles extend over an are of the turbine rotor and are supplied through a box 24, Fig. 2, which may be divided into three parts a, b, c by valves 26, 27. These valves are rotated through racks 29 and pinions by cams 35, 36 on a shaft 34. Also mounted on this shaft is a cam 44 which opens a valve 42 regulating the combustible mixture leaving the pump. The cams are arranged so that, when the shaft is rotated by depressing an accelerator pedal 41, the valve 42 is first opened and then the valves 26, 27 are successively closed, and by this means the spead of the pump is gradually increased. If the turbine is of the reaction type, exhaust gas is admitted to the inside of a ring of buckets and leaves them in a radial direction where an annular valve regulates the flow; this valve is moved by the cam shaft 34 and replaces the valves 26, 27.
