Abstract

253,989. Whitworth, F., and Holloway, H. L. March 23, 1925. Cocoa manufacture.-A drum for fermenting cocoa beans, which rotates about a longitudinal axis, is provided with a longitudinally extending solid shaft 5 which may be of wood or metal and may be circular, square, &c. in cross-section, the shaft having projecting ends adapted to support the drum. The drum has a door, formed bv a slidable section 10 of the drum wall, and agitating bars 6 for the beans, arranged at different angles to each other in parallel planes perpendicular to the shaft 5. The bars 6 may pass through the shaft 5 but are preferably screwed or otherwise fastened to its surface and may have their ends secured to the drum walls or resting against blocks 7 fastened thereto. The drum may be of wood, metal &c. and of circular, rectangular, hexagonal, actagonal or other cross-section, but preferably has a plurality of flat sides which, in the construction described, are formed of wooden sections 1 secured by wooden bands 2, having metal fasteners, and by transverse end struts 4. Fixed or collapsable supports, having parallel runners 8, Fig. 5, may be provided for the drum, the drum having radial handles 9 for rotating it.
