Abstract
252,851. Herbert, Sir A., and Lloyd, A. H. April 25, 1925. Chucks; sockets; mandrels. - A device for gripping work in a lathe or other machine tool wherein the work may be gripped in different positions for performing successive machining operations comprises two separate gripping- devices, one being mounted on the other and the movement of the gripping-devices of one being controlled by that of the other. A chuck 2 having radial jaws 15, 16, has a central recess for a bush 4 which is tapered internally to engage the end of a mandrel 6. The mandrel is split at 25 and is expanded to grip the work 20 by a drawspindle 8 having a floating collar 11 engaging a nut 12 thereon and displaced axially by bevelled plungers 14 which are actuated by the chuck jaws either directly or through flanges 17 secured to the jaws. A spring 19 releases the draw-spindle which may be guided at 18 in the mandrel. In operation, the work may be gripped for a boring operation in the jaws of the chuck 2 with the mandrel removed. after which the work is released, the mandrel inserted in the chuck and the work gripped internally for a subsequent operation. The mandrel may grip by contracting and may be. actuated by a push-spindle and may be replaced by any form of chuck, such as a collet chuck. In a modification of the mandrel the end of the draw-spindle is threaded to engage the work, either internally or externally, which is then drawn against the end face of the mandrel. The draw or push-spindle may be operated by one plunger 14 only, but preferably a plunger is provided for each jaw of the chuck, and each plunger is retained in position by a key-way and screw 22.
