Abstract
Strengthening an adhesive joint between a covering 1 for a building component 2. The covering means may be a brick slip, brick tile, thin brick, brick veneer or brick cladding and the building component may be a metal lintel. The strengthening may comprise recesses, dimples, studs, ridges, grooves, dovetail projections or channels 4 on the brick slip which permit adhesive to travel or expand into in order to enhance adhesive attachment. Alternatively, a metal grid or mesh 34 is used. The strengthening may be a physical key in the brick slip for the adhesive to act on. The grid or mesh may be mechanically couplable to the lintel for example, it may be welded or screwed. The lintel may also have keying to further improve adhesion which may comprise perforations, roughening or interfering with the integrity of the surface.
Description
A COVERING FOR A BUILDING COMPONENT
The present invention relates to a covering for a building component and in particular to an adhesively attachable covering for a lintel.
When constructing a building it is desirable in certain circumstances to include ornate or interesting feature pieces which add to the overall effect of the building or conform the building to the architectural style of those around it. These details are often associated with windows or doors in a building and may take the form of arches or surrounds. Such details were traditionally constructed on site and using traditional brick construction methods which is both time consuming and requires a high degree of skill and craftsmanship. Modern approaches to forming such feature elements involve the installation of a suitably shaped lintel onto which brick or other masonry coverings are attached to provide a finished effect which is aesthetically composed of masonry relevant to the building and conforms to the shape of the lintel therebehind.
Most commonly, these masonry coverings come in the form of brick slips which are relatively thin brick components fitted to a lintel to provide the required shape and aesthetic.
Brick slips can be adhesively bonded to the lintel via a suitable adhesive and current solutions also provide cut-outs in the lintel. This allows a portion of the adhesive to pass there through and form a mechanical gripping formation on the backside of the lintel, further enhancing the grip the adhesive has on the lintel. While this addresses the grip with respect to the bond between the lintel and the adhesive, the bond between the brick slip and the adhesive is often just dictated by the interface of the adhesive and the brick slip which can sometimes be inadequate due to a surface which may be too smooth, too polished, or too powdery. This then becomes the weakest link in the assembly.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problem of providing a masonry slip for attachment to a building component by and adhesive which has sufficient grip at the interface between the adhesive and the masonry slip.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a covering means for a building component, the covering means being attachable to the building component by adhesive means, the covering means further comprising means for strengthening the joint between the building component and the covering means.

The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show by way of example only one embodiment of a covering apparatus in accordance with the invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a covering for a building component; Figure 2 is a section view of a covering attached to a building component; Figure 3 is a section view of the covering attached to a second embodiment of building component; Figure 4 is a section view of a second embodiment of covering attached to a building component; Figure 5 is a section view of a second embodiment of covering attached to a second embodiment of building component; Figure 6 is a schematic elevation view of the covering attached to a building component.
In the drawings, and referring initially to Figure 1, there is shown a covering for a building component indicated generally by the reference numeral 1, the covering 1 being attached to the building component 2, in Figures 2 and 4 a box shaped building component and in Figures 3 and 5 an open profile building component 2, by adhesive 3 and having channels 4 formed therein for receiving adhesive 3 and thus strengthening the joint between the building component 2 and the covering 1, more specifically strengthening the joint between the adhesive 3 and the covering 1. The channels 4 enhance the adhesive attachment between the building component 2 and the covering 1 by permitting adhesive 3 to travel or expand into the channels 4. The channels 4 extend in a straight line longitudinally (see figure 1) proximal to the longitudinal edges of the covering 1 or laterally (see figure 2) along the covering 1.
The covering 1 has a depthwise dimension which extends between a building component facing surface 5 of the covering 1 and a decorative outer surface 6 opposing the lintel facing surface 5. The channels 4 extend in the depthwise direction from the building component facing surface 5 of the covering 1 into the covering 1, towards the decorative outer surface 6 of the covering 1. The deepest point of channels 4 being 5 millimetres below the lintel facing surface 5 of the covering 1.
The channels 4 extend in a depthwise direction from the lintel facing surface 5 of the covering 1 into the covering 1 and towards the decorative outer surface 6 in an oblique fashion with respect to the main plane of the lintel facing surface 5 of the covering 1. The channels 4 extend at an angle towards each other such that the portion 11 between their inner longitudinal walls 9, 10 is widest at the openings 7, 8 on the lintel facing surface 5 of the covering 1 than at any other depthwise location.
The adhesive 3 has a viscosity such that on application of the covering 1 the adhesive 3 is forced into the channels 4. Once the adhesive 3 has set in the channels 4, the orientation and cross sectional shape of the channels 4 prevent the covering 1 from moving in a direction away from the building component 2.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3, there is shown a building component assembly 20 having a building component 2 comprising a covering 1 being attached to the building component 2 via an adhesive 3. The building component 2 is a metal or metal alloy building component. The building component 2 is a metal or metal alloy support member or metal or metal alloy lintel. The keying arrangement 24 is provided by interfering with the integrity of the surface of the fascia wall 21 of the building component 2. The keying arrangement 24 is provided by making the wall 21 perforate. In an alternative arrangement not illustrated in the drawings, the keying arrangement comprises roughening the surface of the wall of the building component or dimpling.
Referring now to Figures 4 to 6, there is shown a second embodiment of building component assembly 30 having a building component 2 comprising a covering 1 being attached to the building component 2 via an adhesive 3. The covering 1 also has channels 4 for receiving adhesive for further enhancing the adhesive and structural attachment between the adhesive and the covering 1. The mesh extends along the fascia 21 and the soffit 22 of the building component 2. Figure 4 shows a box shaped building component 2 and Figure 5 shows an open profile building component 2.
