Abstract
A collapsible wheelie bin has a wheeled base and a hinged lid 10. Ideally side walls of the bin concertina to collapse vertically. A lever 11 in the bins base can release the mechanism to move the walls between collapsed and erect positions. The bin is preferably the same size and shape as a standard wheelie bin and has a catch to secure the lid closed.
Description
REFUSE CONTAINERS
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to refuse containers and is concerned with that kind of refuse container commonly referred to as "a wheelie bin", which is filled with rubbish and then put in a convenient position by the side of the road ready to be emptied into a refuse vehicle.
Such bins are of a substantial size and, once emptied, have to be taken back into an appropriate location by the householder. They can be unsightly and inconvenient, and occupy a significant amount of space.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of wheelie bin.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a wheelie bin that includes a wheeled base, a hinged lid and a main structure that can be converted between an erected condition and a collapsed condition.
The hinged lid is preferably of the same size and configuration as a standard wheelie bin and a lever is preferably pivotally mounted on the base of the bin, the arrangement being such that, when it is desired to move the main structure from its collapsed condition into its erected condition or from its erected condition into its collapsed condition, the user presses the lever to permit carrying out of the required movement. The main structure is preferably a concertina-type structure.
A clip may be provided that can be operated to hold the lid in its closed position.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a standard wheelie bin, Figure 3 is a perspective view of a wheelie bin in accordance with the present invention in its erected condition, Figure 4 shows the wheelie bin of Figure 3 in a partially collapsed condition, and Figures 5 and 6 are front and rear views of the wheelie bin of Figure 3.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Figures 3 to 6 of the accompanying drawings show the wheelie bin of the present invention, which is so designed that it can be handled (e.g. emptied) in the same way as a standard existing wheelie bin as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The lid 10 of the wheelie bin of Figures 3 to 6 is thus of the same configuration and size as the lid of the bin of Figures 1 and 2.
The wheelie bin of Figures 3 to 6 can readily be converted from its fully erected condition (shown in Figure 3), via its partially collapsed state (shown in Figure 4) into its fully collapsed condition (shown in Figures 5 and 6). Such movement of the main structure of the wheelie bin between its two conditions is effected by first depressing a pivotally mounted lever 11 at the base of the bin, and then effecting the required upward or downward movement of the lid and the main structure of the bin.
The main structure of the bin is of a concertina type, as clearly shown in Figure 4, and the material from which the main structure is formed may include a carbon-fibre-reinforced fabric.
A clip 12 is provided for locking the lid 10 to the base when the bin is in its fully collapsed condition so as to facilitate carrying of the collapsed bin into a convenient storage location. The wheels of the bin are typically arranged so that they can be turned under the base of the pin so as to reduce the space required for storage of the collapsed bin.
Claims (6)
- Claims:- 1. A wheelie bin that includes a wheeled base, a hinged lid and a main structure that can be converted between an erected condition and a collapsed condition.
- 2. A wheelie bin as claimed in Claim 1, n which the hinged lid is of the same size and configuration as a standard wheelie bin.
- 3. A wheelie bin as claimed in Claim 1, in which a lever is pivotally mounted on the base of the bin, the arrangement being such that, when it is desired to move the main structure from its collapsed condition into its erected condition or from its erected condition into its collapsed condition, the user presses the lever to permit carrying out of the required movement.
- 4. A wheelie bin as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the main structure is a concertina-type structure.
- 5. A wheelie bin as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, which includes a clip that can be operated to hold the lid in its closed position.
- 6. A wheelie bin substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
