Abstract
A cryogenic tanker truck having an inert medium vessel 30 in addition to the High Value Cryogenic Liquid (HVCL) tank 10. The inert medium, which may be liquid nitrogen, liquid argon or any suitable inert gas, is used to the cool down delivery equipment prior to offloading of HVCL and thereby avoids loss of HVCL.
Description
TANKER TRUCK FOR DELIVERY OF HIGH VALUE LIOUJFIED GASES
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
(001) The present invention relates to the design of a tanker truck for use in the delivery of High Value Cryogenically Liquefied Gas (HVCL).
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
(002) Cryogenic gases (those gases liquefied by cooling to a liquefaction point using refrigeration), are important for industrial, medical and energy needs. Some of these liquids are classed high value due to either theft rarity or cost of production. Because the normal physical state of these molecules is in the form of gas, it is necessary to liquefy them to a liquid form to facilitate long range transport to customers or regions of need. An example of a High Value Cryogenic Liquid (HVCL) would be Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) which is a gas in its normal physical state and if transport to customers were needed in this form, it would take up a large volume or be inefficient to do so. This means the direct use of natural gas is generally restricted to localized area production, e.g. to areas that can be directly supplied by pipeline. LNG is natural gas that has been liquefied by reducing the temperature to cryogenic levels. LNG takes up significantly less space than natural gas, e.g. LNG is about 1/6OO the volume of the same amount of natural gas. Therefore, LNG makes it possible to transport S.....
natural gas by tanker or truck to almost any location where it can then be re-distributed for use ". by the customer. Other High Value Gases (Argon, Ethylene, Xenon, Krypton, Oxygen and Helium are non exclusive examples of High Value Gases) also suffer the same problems : when preparing to unload from a tanker to a storage facility.
(003) HVCL customer sites are generally comprised of a cryogenic storage tank and devices to re-heat the liquid into a usable gas for other applications to use and can be located in remote locations. HVCL's are often provided to these customer sites by tanker trucks that offload the HVCL to the cryogenic storage tank. In order to avoid damage to equipment, such as pumps, needed for this offload, such equipment must be initially cooled down. This is normally accomplished by allowing some of the FTVCL from the tanker truck to pass through offloading equipment prior to starting delivery to the cryogenic storage tank of the customer.
This has the effect of cooling the equipment and vaporizing the HVCL which is then lost to the delivery process.
(004) Performing the equipment cool down in this manner results in the disadvantageous loss of the HVCL used during for the cool down procedure. This loss can be as much as 15% of the tanker truck total e.g. about 3000 kg of HVCL per 20000kg offload cycle. This represents a significant loss of HVCL and value.
(005) Therefore, there is a need in the art for improvements to the process of offloading HVCL from tanker trucks to cryogenic storage vessels at customer sites.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
(006) The invention provides a cryogenic tanker truck having an inert medium vessel in addition to the primary cryogenic tank. The inert medium, which may be liquid nitrogen or liquid argon is used for the cool down process and thereby avoids loss of HVCLs.

(010) Figure 4 is a schematic diagram showing details of a compressor for an HVCL tanker truck according to an embodiment of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
(011) The invention will be described by reference to the thawing figures.
(012) Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the invention wherein a tanker truck includes a cryogenic storage tank 10 with a pressure raising coil 20 for off load of the cryogenic liquid to a separate storage facility. Also included in an inert medium vessel 30 that provided the liquid medium for initial cool down of the off loading equipment prior to beginning the off load of the cryogenic liquid. The inert medium vessel 30 may be filled with liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, or another suitable material that would serve to adequately cool the equipment prior to cryogenic off load. The inert medium vessel 30 may be of a standard LNG fuel tank design that has already been designed and tested for use on the road.
(013) Another embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 2 wherein like components use like reference numerals. In particular, in Figure 2, the cryogenic storage tank 10 has a pressure raising coil 20 and pump 40 for off load of the HVCL to a separate storage facility.
Further, the inert medium vessel 30 is provided and supplies inert mediunTi through a condenser 50 to cool the pump 40 and other equipment prior to cryogenic liquid off load and also provides inert medium as a pressure raising medium to the cryogenic storage tank 10.
The condenser 50 is of a horizontal design to facilitate fit under the tanker truck, between the inert medium vessel 30 and the road. The vent gas from the condenser 50 can be used as the pressure raising material for the cryogenic storage tank 10. *
(014) A further embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 3 wherein like components t..
use like reference numerals. In particular, Figure 3, shows the cryogenic storage tank 10 with * : the pressure raising coil 20 and pump 40 for off load of the cryogenic liquid to a separate storage facility. The inert medium vessel 30 supplies inert medium through a condenser 50 to cool the pump 40 and other equipment prior to cryogenic liquid off load and also provides : :*. inert medium as a pressure raising medium to the cryogenic storage tank 10. An additional vacuum pump 60 is also provided for delivery of the inert medium to the system.
(015) Figure 4 shows the compressor 50 of Figures 2 and 3 in greater detail. As shown in Figure 4, the condenser 50 is of a horizontal design that fits below the inert medium vessel 30 but above the road. The condenser 50 includes a hot gas inlet 52, a cold gas outlet 54 and a vent or PR coil 56.
(016) The advantages of the invention include reduced losses of cryogenic liquids during delivery. In addition, the speed of delivery can be increased, because continuous pressure raising within the cryogenic road tanker is possible by utilizing the inert medium to raise the pressure as opposed to recycled the H'VCL being delivered. This also means there will be no increase to the saturation level of the cryogenic liquid because the cryogenic liquid is not being used to raise pressure.
(017) It will be understood that the embodiments described herein are merely exemplary and that one skilled in the art may make variations and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. All such variations and modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the invention as described above. Further, all embodiments disclosed are not necessarily in the alternative, as various embodiments of the invention may be combined to provide the desired result. S. * * S * S
