Abstract
The arrangement comprises a section of cable 16 for connection to a plug 18 and a spring 12 connected between two non-adjacent points on the cable 16 or between a plug 18 and a point on the cable 16 such that the spring 12 and section of cable form a loop 20. It is envisaged that the arrangement may be used with portable devices including a guitar.
Description
An improved electrical connection arrangement The present invention relates to an improved electrical connection arrangement especially but not exclusively for use with bass and guitar leads.
It is known to form temporary or removable electrical connections, for example by a frictional relationship between a conductor of a plug and a conductor of a corresponding socket. Many varieties of plug and socket combinations are available which are designed to be suitable for a particular purpose. Examples may range between mains voltage two-or three-pin plugs and sockets on to headphone jacks and sockets, including 6.5mm instrument input jacks and sockets. Plugs and sockets are usually each connected by an internal mechanical arrangement to a corresponding cable or circuitry.
Known corresponding plugs and sockets suffer from a common problem, irrespective of their size or purpose, which is that if a force is exerted on a cable connected to a plug or socket the force may cause the plug and socket to separate causing a break in the electrical connection between the plug and socket or the force may cause the internal mechanical connection within the plug or socket to fail. A break in the electrical connection may result in disruption, a failure of an internal connection may be costly to repair or even be a significant safety hazard.
The risk of a force as described may vary significantly depending on the situation. For example a static computer connected via a mains plug to a wall socket is much less likely to be disturbed than a laptop computer.
For the reasons described above, laptop manufacturers have developed plug and socket combinations which do not require a large force to disconnect. This results in the electrical connection being sacrificed in order to prevent damage to the plug or socket and/or to prevent the laptop from being pulled to the floor by the force.
However these connections are not useful in a situation where the preservation of the electrical connection is desired.
It is therefore an aim of the present invention to provide an electrical connection between a plug and a socket which allows continuity of the electrical connection with mitigation for a tension force applied to a cable.
Accordingly a first aspect of the present invention is directed to a cable arrangement comprising a section of cable, for connection to a plug, and a spring connected between two non-adjacent points on the cable or between a plug and a point on the cable such that the spring and section of cable form a loop.
When no tension force is applied to the cable, the spring remains substantially non-extended. If a tension force is applied to the cable, the spring may extend, allowing the loop to extend, enabling the section of the cable arrangement beyond the spring to be affected by a reduced tension force. Therefore a plug at the end of the cable should be affected by reduced amount of the tension force and should not be dislocated.
Preferably, the length of the spring at maximum extension is at least the length of the cable between the two non-adjacent points or between the plug and the one point on the cable.
Preferably, the plug is an input jack.
Preferably, one end of the spring is connected to the jack cover and the other end is connected to a point on the cable.
Advantageously, the spring engages with the cable insulation by friction.
Preferably, the spring is constructed from steel wire.
Advantageously, the non-extended length of the spring is between 3cm and 8cm.
Advantageously, the extended length of the spring is between 5cm and 13cm.
Preferably, the diameter of the non-extended spring is about 7mm.
Preferably, the diameter of the wire forming the spring is between 0.5mm and 0.9mm.
Advantageously, the non-extended length of the spring is 5. 5cm.
Advantageously, the extended length of the spring is 7.9cm.
A second aspect of the present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a cable arrangement according to the first aspect of the present invention, comprising the steps of: -drilling a hole in an input jack; -threading one end of the spring into the hole in the input jack; -winding the other end of the spring around insulation of a cable at a non-adjacent point on the cable; -applying pressure to the section of the spring which has been wound around the insulation thereby tightening the frictional grip.
An embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective side view of an arrangement according to the present invention in which substantially no tension force is being applied to the cable; and Figure 2 is a perspective side view of an arrangement according to the present invention in which a tension force is being applied to the cable.
Figure 1 shows a connection arrangement 10 according to the first aspect of the present invention. A jack 18, in this case a musical jack is attached to a cable 16. The connection arrangement 10 comprises a spring 12 which is connected at one end A to a jack cover 14 of the jack 18 and at the other end B to a point on the cable 16. when the spring 12 is in its non-extended position the section of cable 16 between the two ends of the spring A and B is substantially longer than the spring 12 and forms a loop 20. The jack 18 is suitable for frictional and electrical connection to a corresponding socket (not shown) and the other end of the cable (not shown) may be attached to a further jack or any other connection.
Figure 2 shows a connection arrangement according to the first aspect of the present invention wherein a connection arrangement 10 comprises a spring 12 which is connected at one end A to a jack cover 14 and at the other end B to a point on a cable 16. A tension force F has been applied to the cable. The spring 12 has been extended to its maximum extension. The seotion of cable 16 disposed between the two ends of the spring A and B is slightly longer than the spring 12, the cable 16 forming a shallow loop 20. A jack (not shown) forms a frictional and electrical connection to a corresponding socket which is part of an electric guitar 22. The other end of the cable (not shown) may be attached to a further jack or any other connection. In use the tension force F has caused the extension of the spring 12 and the shallowing of the loop 20 meaning that the frictional and electrical connection between the jack (not shown) and the socket (not shown) of the electric guitar 22 is maintained.
Thus the connection reduces over time the wear on the jack attached to the guitar leading to less freguent breaks in the cable and/or jack thus reducing the number of cables needed over time and the cost to the musician.
Claims (11)
- ClaIms 1. A cable arrangement ccnprising a section of cable, for connection to a plug, and a spring connected between two non-adjacent points on the cable or between a plug and a point on the cable such that the spring and section of cable form a loop.
- 2. A cable arrangement according to claim 1, in which the length of the spring at maximum extension is at least the length of the cable between the two non-adjacent points or between the plug and the one point on the cable.
- 3. A cable arrangement according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the plug is an input jack.0
- 4. A cable arrangement according to claim 3, in which one end of the spring is connected to the jack cover and the other end is connected to a point on the cable.
- 5. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the spring engages with the cable insulation by friction.
- 6. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the spring is ccnstructed from steel wire.
- 7. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the non-extended length of the spring is between 3cm and 8cm.
- 8. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the extended length of the spring is between 5cm and 13cm.
- 9. A cable arrangement according to claim 8, in which the extended length of the spring is 7.9cm.
- 10. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the diameter of the non-extended spring is about 7mm.
- 11. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the diameter of the wire forming the spring is between 0.5mm and 0.9mm.zJ-12. A cable arrangement according to any preceding claim, in which the non-extended length of the spring is (4 O 5.5cm.13. A method of manufacturing a cable arrangement according to the first aspect of the present invention, comprising the steps of: -drilling a hole in an input jack; -threading one end of the spring into the hole in the input jack; -winding the other end of the spring around insulation of a cable at a non-adjacent point on the cable; -applying pressure to the section of the spring which has been wound around the insulation thereby tightening the frictional grip.-10 - 14.
