Liquids, treating with gases.-In apparatus for treating liquids such as alcohol, liquid air, oxygen or nitrogen &c. with gases, and composing metal plates of the kind described in Specification 189,442, the interstices in the plates are made of a size below 1-10th mm. across to retain the liquid if the pressures on the two sides of the plate are about the same and to cause gas passing through the interstices to form froth or foam with the liquid. The plates A may be formed by winding spirally alternate corrugated and plain ribbons of copper, or by layers of gauze placed one above another, or by plaiting or interlacing flat strands of copper or other metal to form a tubing which is flattened and wound spirally. The plates A are arranged in a column having central liquid seals which allow the liquid to pass down the column. The froth or foam formed on one of the plates passes over the edge of a vessel B which has a downward projection g forming a liquid seal in a vessel h. Liquid passes from the vessel h by distributing pipes i on to the platebelow.
