Abstract
A urine directing device, comprising a hollow body with upper and lower parts, connected at a bend, which has an attachable urine sample receptacle. Said receptacle is filled by means of capillary action through minute holes in the urine device. The upper part may have a splayed end. The device may be made in two halves, connected by a clip. Commercial reagent sticks may be insertable into the urine sample receptacle.
Description
The Scunthorpe Urine Flowstix Holster-Description
The Urine Flowstix Holster is a urine-channelling device consisting of an elongated hollow cylindrical body. The Body has a gentle bend in the central portion, dividing it into a proximal part which leads on from the proximal end and a distal part which leads to the distal end. It looks like a bent barrel of a gun.
The proximal end is splayed by the help of longitudinal slits running down the proximal part of the barrel design. This allows for east fitting. The distal end has a slightly tapering design to compensate for any energy lost by urine in the bend It also has, on its internal surface channels that facilitate the flow of urine from proximal to distal.
On the lower aspect of the distal part, there is attached an elongated compartment in the shape of a rectangular parallelpiped. This separate compartment is connected to the main cylindrical portion of the barrel design through several minute holes which would use capillary action to suck out minute samples of urine for reagent testing. This sample would be stored temporarily in the elongated separate compartment so that a commercial biochemical reagent stick be inserted in it. The compartment appears to form a spine' of the device, especially at the distal part.
The device is to be manufactured as two component pieces made of suitable polymer material that could withstand gamma irradiation (for sterilisation) and there is a safety tag' clip design to hold the components in place as the device is assembled. The safety tag design on the clip consists of one component containing a buckle and the other component a flap where the tip of the flap is triangular. The resultant shoulder created by the triangular tip results in secure closure.
This device design can be adapted for use in several clinical scenarios, for instance, for uroflowmetry machines, having several smaller holes between the main body and the separate compartment, coupled with a gentle angle of 15 degrees can produce minimal flow disruption whilst providing the sample in question. Replacing separate compartment with a hole to accommodate a urine sample bottle, where larger volumes are required. Also, the proximal splayed ends could be fitted with rubberised material for the creation of softer flaps for use on the female or for use in collecting diarrhoea samples in a hygienic way. A sturdier reusable device can be created for bedbound patients with a sterile rubberised internal lining, or even coating the internal surface with chemical reagents for testing, or other purposes.
