Description

Barrier Assembly
The Present invention relates to a barrier assembly, of the type used in constructionsites and the like, to keep pedestrians away from dangerous locations. Theinvention is particularly concerned with an assembly that can be assembled fromcomponents and dismantled for convenient transportation and storage.
Viewed from one aspect, as defined in claim 1, the present invention provides abarrier assembly comprising a moulded plastics support, the support having alongitudinally extending, upwardly facing, relatively narrow slot, and a barrier panelwhich is removably received in the slot and projects upwardly from the support;wherein the support comprises a ground engaging base and a main body portionwhich projects upwardly from said base and terminates in said slot; wherein themain body portion comprises a rear face and a front face, the rear face having asubstantially planar upwardly extending surface extending from the base toadjacent the slot; the base extending forwardly for a substantial distance; and thefront face having a portion which extends downwardly and forwardly to meet thebase.
Preferably, the base projects forwardly for a sufficient amount that the front to backdepth of the base of the support is at least of the same order as the height of thesupport. For example the maximum depth of the base of the support may be noless than about 75% of the height of the support; or no less than about 100% of theheight of the support; or for example the maximum depth of the base of the supportmay be no less than the height of the support; or for example the maximum depthof the base of the support may exceed the height of the support. The height of thesupport may be measured from the base to the top of the main body portion wherethere is an entry into the slot.
The portion of the support which extends downwardly and forwardly the meet thebase, may be concave and curved. The sides of the base which projects forwardly,may converge. A barrier assembly constructed in the way is stable to prevent the barrier paneltipping in either the forwards or the rearwards direction. However, because the rear of the support is planar, extending vertically upwards, or at least substantiallyperpendicular to the base, there are no protruding parts on that side of the supportwhich could trip a pedestrian.
Preferably a plurality of the barrier assemblies will be used, to form a barrier ofsufficient length. A number of support may be placed along the line of the intendedbarrier, and then a number of barrier panels may be located in the slots of thesupports, and also linked together so as to provide a secure barrier.
The barrier may be of a dense plastics material so as to have sufficient weight togive it stability. It may, for example be moulded from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), forexample form post consumer recycled PVC.
The barrier provided by a plurality of the barrier panels may be supplemented by,for example, and upper series of wire fencing panels which are located in the upperedges of the barrier panels.
Viewed from another aspect, the invention provides a barrier comprising a pluralityof barrier assemblies as described above, with the supports being positioned alongthe line of the barrier and the barrier panels being engaged with each other.
Also described herein and not claimed is a support for a barrier panel, comprisingwherein the support comprises a ground engaging base and a main body portionwhich projects upwardly from said base and terminates in a longitudinallyextending, upwardly facing, relatively narrow slot adapted to receive the lower endof a barrier panel; wherein the main body portion comprises a rear face and a frontface, the rear face having a substantially planar upwardly extending surfaceextending from the base to adjacent the slot; the base extending forwardly for asubstantial distance; and the front face having a portion which extends downwardlyand forwardly to meet the base.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example andwith reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a barrier assembly in accordance with the invention,with the barrier panel and the support shown separated;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the support;
Figure 3 is a view from one end of the support;
Figure 4 is view from the other end of the support;
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the support;
Figure 6 is a rear elevation of the support; and
Figure 7 is view similar to that of Figure 1, but showing the barrier panel located inthe support, and also showing a fencing panel on top of the barrier panel.
Referring now in details to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a barrier panel 1 and asupport 2. The barrier panel has a spigot 3 and a socket 4 to that it can be joined tolike barrier panels. At its lower end, the barrier panel is provided with three tabs 5so that it can be located in a relatively narrow slot 6 at the top of a main bodyportion 7 of the support.
The support has a base 8 which projects forwards from the rear of the main bodyportion 7, by a distance which exceeds the height of the main body portion. Theside 9 and 10 of the base converge towards the front of the support and are joinedby a transverse portion 11. From about one third down the front face 12 of the mainbody portion, a portion 13 of the front face curves in a convex manner downwardlyand forwardly to meet the base along the converging sides 9 and 10 and thetransverse portion 11.
The rear face 14 of the support is planar and extends vertically upwards,perpendicular to the base, for the whole height of the support.
As shown in Figure 7, the barrier panel 1 has been slotted into the slot 6 of thesupport 2, and an additional fencing panel 15 has been located on the upper edge16 of the barrier panel 1.
