Abstract

250,615. Excelsior Feurl÷schgerõte Akt.-Ges., (Assignees of Neumann, F.). April 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Chemicals; extincteurs; fire-extinguishing in tanks by gases or foam; sprinklers, automatic. - A device for extinguishing fires in tanks or containers for inflammable liquids comprises a hollow float which covers most cf the surface of the liquid and has an overhanging cover defining a roofed-in annular chamber around the float, and is charged with or has means for producing an extinguishing agent. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the float b with overhanging cover c has compartments e around its edge containing glass vessels f of bromine or carbontetrachloride, the nozzles h of which are inclined to direct a jet of liquid against the wall of the tank a, whence it vaporizes into the annular chamber g. The vessels f are broken when a fire occurs by spring plungers released by fuse cords. The compartments e may be filled with the inflammable liquid to prevent freezing of the extinguishing liquid. In a modification, extinguishing liquid is expelled from a chamber centrally arranged in the float by pressure from a gas-generating cartridge operated by spring strikers controlled by fuse cords. In another modification, Fig. 6, a receptacle x in the float contains a liquid component of a foam mixture and delivers to a vessel y containing dry foam ingredients by way of a pipe 4 controlled by a cock 5 operated by a lever 6, spring, and fuse cords. From the vessel y the foam produced passes to a distributing chamber 2 and thence to the annular chamber g by pipes 3. The cover c of the float is hinged and held down by a screw 10. In another modification, liquid foam ingredients are contained in separate compartments in the float and pass to a mixing chamber when metal discs are pierced by a striker operated when a gas cartridge is fired by fuse cords. In each construction the float b is preferably air-tight and may be evacuated.
