Abstract
The invention is generally directed to providing protection circuitry to selectively handle power-providing cables and headset cables that can couple to the same port of an electronic device (eg a 3.5mm headphone jack 506, fig.5). The device includes a Headset Rx circuit 742 to communicate with a headset cable and a Power Rx circuit 732 to communicate with a power-providing cable. As the Headset Rx circuit and the Power Rx circuit can be coupled to the same contact of the device's port, these circuits may prevent one another from operating correctly or may damage one another. Accordingly, a first contact 760 of the port is used to determine when a cable with a circuit is connected to the port and a second contact 764 is used to determine the cable type. When a headset cable (504, fig.5) is coupled to the device and authenticated by the Headset Rx circuit, a power control circuit 750 disconnects the Power Rx chip. The Headset Rx circuit may similarly be disconnected when a power-providing cable (502, fig.5) is coupled to the device and authenticated by the Power Rx circuit.
