Abstract

A pouch 1 for a portable electronic device has a wall 2 defining an interior volume 3, the wall comprising an absorbent core 4 which comprises an absorbent crystalline material. The core may also comprise absorbent fibrous material 6, which may be 40% to 80% by weight of the total absorbent core. The absorbent fibrous material may be a cellosic material, a polymeric material or a superabsorbent polymer. The superabsorbent polymer may be polyacrylate or polyalcrylamide, or salts of these. The pouch wall 2 may comprise inner 8 and outer 9 layers, between which the absorbent core 4 is arranged. The inner 8 wall may be water permeable, and the outer 9 wall may be water impermeable. There may be a closure means for closing the pouch volume 3. The pouch may be adapted to receive a mobile phone, a tablet device or a laptop or netbook computer.

Description

A POUCH FOR A PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE
The present invention relates to a pouch for portable electronic device. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to a pouch comprising a pouch wall defining a volume for receiving a portable electronic device, the pouch wall comprising an absorbent core, the absorbent core compdsing an absorbent crystaUine material.
Water damage to portable electronic devices, in particular mobile phones or laptops is a common problem. This is typically caused by dropping the device into a pool of water, for example a wash basin or a drinks container. The water can interfere with the operation of the electronic components of the device, preventing the device from operating as intended.
Allowing the device to dry naturally or by heating can be time consuming and is often ineffective.
The pouch for a portable electronic device according the invention seeks to overcome the
problems of the prior art.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a pouch for a portable electronic device comprising a pouch wall defining a volume for receiving the portable electronic device, the pouch wall comprising an absorbent core, the absorbent core comprising an absorbent crystalline material.
The absorbent core draws the water from the electronic device, preventing further damage and often returning the device to an operating state.
The absorbent core can further comprise an absorbent fibrous material.
The absorbent fibrous material can comprise from 40% to 80% by weight of the total absorbent core.
The absorbent fibrous material can be a cellulosic materiaL The absorbent crystalline material can be a polymeric material.
The absorbent crystalline polymeric material can be a superabsorbent polymer.
The superabsorbent polymer can be one or more polyacrylate or polyacrylamide.
The polyacrylate or polyacrylamide can be a polyacrylate and/or polyacrylamide salts.
The pouch wall can comprise inner and outer layers, the absorbent core being arranged therebetween.
The inner wall can be waler permeable.
The outer wall can be water impermeable.
The pouch can further comprise a closure means for closing the volume.
The pouch can be adapted to receive a mobile phone. Alternatively, the pouch can be adapted to receive a tablet device, more particularly a Kindle or iPad. As a further alternative, the pouch can be adapted to receive a laptop or netbook.
The present invention will now be described by way of example only, and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a pouch for a portable electronic device according to the invention in cross section; and, Figure 2 shows a further embodiment at a pouch for a portable electronic device according to the invention.
Shown in figure 1 is a pouch 1 for a portable electronic device according to the invention. The pouch 1 comprises a pouch wall 2 defining a volume 3 for receiving a mobile phone. The pouch wall 2 comprises an absorbent core 4 which in turn comprises an absorbent crystalline material 5. Such crystals have a low volume when dry and so make the pouch I relatively thin. When the pouch 1 is saturated the crystals absorb a large amount of water to form an absorbent gelling polymer capable of retaining water. Preferably the gelling polymer is able to retain the fluid even whilst under pressure.
Absorbent crystals suitable for use in the absorbent core 4 include so called super absorbent polymers. Such crystals may include sodium polyacrylate (which is used in many disposable nappiesldiapers for children and infants) or a polyacrylamide with a potassium salt base (which is in fact a slow release agent sometimes used in soil moisture applications). These types of substances can hold up to 200 times their own weight of water. It would be well known to one skilled in the art that mixtures of superabsorbent polymers could be used.
Other materials are also used to make a superabsorbent polymer, such as polyacrylarnide copolymer, ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer, cross linked carboxyl methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol copolymers, cross linked polyethylene oxide, and starch grafted copolymer of polyacrylonitrile.
The absorbent core 4 further comprises a fibrous material 6. The fibrous material 6 preferably comprises a cellulosic material, for example a pulp fibre such as wood pulp or fibre crop material, such as cotton pulp and the like. Cotton pulp is preferred. There are numerous other fibre crop materials available and it will be appreciated by the person skilled in the art that a number of such materials andlor mixtures of such materials may be used.
The ratio of absorbent crystalline material 5 to absorbent fibrous material 6 may vary and may depend on a number of factors, such as the nature of the crystalline material 5 eg the superabsorbent polymer, the nature of the fibrous material 6 eg pulp. Thus for example of the total absorbent core 4 the fibrous material 6 may comprise of from 40% to 80% by weight, preferably from 50Db to 70% by weight, 55% to 65% by weight, the crystalline material 5 making all or a substantial proportion of the remainder.
In this embodiment the absorbent core 4 comprises a mixture of the crystalline material 5 and fibrous material 8. This could for example be produced by blowing the fibrous material 6 and crystalline material 5 into a chamber where they mix. The mixture is then passed from the chamber onto a liner 7. A further liner 7 is then laid on top of the mixture and the two liners 7 joined together to form the core 4. In an alternative embodiment the absorbent core 4 lacks the liners 7. The liners 7 are typically a fibrous material.
The pouch wall 2 comprises inner and outer layers 8,9 with the absorbent core 4 sandwiched therebetween. The outer layer 9 in this embodiment is a water resistant material such as a plastics material or leather. The inner layer 8 is permeable to water.
S
In this embodiment the pouch 1 is adapted to receive a mobe phone. The water resistant outer layer 9 keeps the phone dry when not in use. If the mobile phone becomes wet It is inserted into the pouch 1-The absorbent core 4 draws the water from the phone into the absorbent core so drying the phone.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention the pouch I is adapted to receive a tablet device, in particular a Kindle of iPad. In a further alternative embodiment the pouch is adapted to receive a laptop or netbook. In each case the operation of the pouch is the same, with the absorbent core 4 drawing water from the electronic device within the pouch 1.
Shown in figure 2 is an alternative embodiment of a pouch I according to the invention. In contrast to the embodiment of figure 1 the pouch 1 is adapted to be sealed. The pouch waIl 2 defines a mouthlo. Connected to the two edges of the mouth 10 is a closure means. In this embodiment this comprises a snap fit connection. This improves the rate of drying of the phone in the pouch. In an alternative embodiment the closure means 11 comprises a zip.
Further, in this embodiment the inner layer comprises a hydrophilic material which draws the moisture from the phone into the absorbent core, again increasing the drying of the phone.
The absorbent core 4 of this embodiment is a multi-layer structure. The absorbent core 4 comprises alternating layers of fibrous material 5 and absorbent crystalline material 6, all held within liner layers 7. In alternative embodiments (not shown) the layers 5,6 are arranged in different patterns. As a further example a single layer of absorbent crystalline material S is arranged between layers of fibrous material 5.
