Abstract

249,738. McMann, M. H. Aug. 24, 1925. Indiarubber and other e l a s t i c stoppers. - A bottle having a downwardly facing shoulder 7 around the outside of its mouth is closed by a member comprising a rigid stopper portion 9 fitting against the opening and held there against by a ring of flexible resilient material, such as rubber, one edge of the ring being formed as a bead 11 adapted to engage in a groove 12 in the stopper portion 9 whilst the other edge is formed as a relatively stiff gripping portion 13 having a shoulder 14 adapted to engage beneath the shoulder 7 when the closure is pressed down on the bottle. From the shoulder 14 the ring is flared outwardly as at 16, and this, in conjunction with an external shoulder 15, facilitates application of the closure. When the closure is applied, a thin portion 10 between the head 11 and grpping portion 13, which permits the portion 13 to pass over the mouth and engage beneath the shoulder 7, remains stretched to draw down the closure on to the bottle. In a modification. the ring is replaced by a cap which covers the stopper portion entirely.
