Abstract
A vehicle is illuminated by application of phosphorescent paint to the vehicle. A phosphorescent additive such as strontium aluminate is added to automotive paint rendering the paint luminescent when charged with exposure to daylight. The phosphorescent painted vehicle will subtly and delicately glow. Also disclosed is use of an electroluminescent film, sheet or panel on the vehicle or part of the vehicle. The phosphorescent paint or electroluminescent film, sheet or panel can be used in the formation of a design or image on the vehicle for marketing, branding, personalization safety marking as well as to highlight vehicle access points.
Description
Patent Description:
Use of colour effect paints on vehicles is well established in the vehicle industry. The prior art discloses the use of a variety of effect paints including; fluorescent, neon, metallic and pearlescent, which can be used in conjunction with or as an addition to conventional paint. The present invention relates to the application of either phosphorescent paint or electroluminescent panels or a combination of phosphorescent paint and electroluminescent panels to a vehicle.
The description of the invention of Radiance', a future concept made from either a luminous paint additive whether it be added to a conventional, metallic or pearlescent paint; or a coating made from a phosphorescent additive or an electroluminescent panel system, for a vehicle. Non-limiting examples of the vehicle include; car, racecar, bus, motorcycle, bike, truck, rescue vehicle, aircraft, boat or lifeboat.
The design will incorporate either a full body glow, as the image (image 1) illustrates but does not limit the invention, or a panel system glow highlighting certain elements or sections of the vehicle for example doors, bonnet, front bumper.
The colour of this design will stretch throughout the colour gamut from red through to violet, including white, silver, grey and black.
The uses of this invention on a vehicle will cover un-limiting purposes such as: Marketing purposes Advertising purposes Branding purposes Personalization and individualization on a personal vehicle Distinctiveness This invention would also offer high visibility for a safety purposes. Vehicle legislation lighting has to be considered as the intensity of the glow -electroluminescence should not detract from the standard vehicle exterior lighting and legal vehicle registration markings.
The concept invention employs phosphorescent technologies. This could be created by adding a phosphorescent additive in the paint! coating system and could include the non-limiting examples such as strontium aluminate to the automotive paint allowing the paint to become luminescent when charged with exposure to daylight. Adding a photoluminescent paint or coating would allow the vehicle to subtly and delicately glow.
Alternatively, electroluminescent sheets or panels or LED film could be used, as their total flexibility in shape, and 3D application, is limitless due to their unique chemical composition. Furthermore, the innovative manufacturing process allows bespoke panels to be custom made to the desired criteria for whatever vehicle it will be applied to. The electroluminescent panels would add a maximum thickness of around 0.2mm to the outer body of the vehicle. A choice of a full body wrap or specific elements to highlight the shape of the vehicle would be available to the customer.
The electroluminescent sheet, film or panel may be further used to highlight vehicle access points for example, interior door frames, boot!hatch frame, bonnet and bonnet frame for safety purposes.
Electroluminescent panels work by an organic phosphor with coloured overlays being sandwiched between two conductors. When a low voltage current is applied it rapidly charges phosphor crystals, which emit visible light.
Electroluminescent panels offer up to 1200 lux (similar to a 100w halogen light bulb, but with only 10% of its power consumption), however, in order to produce the suitable warm light effect on the vehicle, a range of approximately 25-75 lux (with very low power consumption) would offer the delicate glow required.
Radiance', whether using phosphorescent technologies or electroluminescent panels or sheets, is designed for vehicles to make them that little bit more extraordinary, distinct and unique to the customer who wishes to differentiate their vehicle, or for company purposes as an advertising, promotion or branding technique on the vehicle. A delicate glow denotes a softly spoken elegance stimulating the senses, allowing science and technology to be woven into our consciousness. Radiance pushes boundaries, opening up a new level of customer selectable options in the vehicle industry.
