Abstract
249,329. Borroughs, J. N. April 6, 1925. Towel rollers. - In a towel cabinet of the type in which the lastused portion of a towel hangs in a loop outside the cabinet 1, Fig. 1, and in which the towel is fed from a supply roller 10 over guide rollers 30, 31 provided respectively with pressure rollers 46, 50 to a take-up roller 16, a shield 62 normally rests in front of the last used portion of towelling but is displaced when the rollers feed the webbing. Driving means for the feed rollers include a reciprocating operating element which is only operative in one direction of movement. The shield 62 is raised by a treadle 64 and a cord 77, a second cord 78, Fig. 3, connected to a spring-controlled chain 80, simultaneously rotating the rollers 10, 16, through a pawl 44 on a sprocket wheel 40 and gearing 26, 33 - - 36, to wind the used portion on to the roller 16 and feed a fresh length from the roller 10. On releasing the treadle 64, the shield 62 drops by gravity and the spring 81 returns the chain 80 to its original position. A spring- pressed friction coupling is provided between the gear wheel 26 and the roller 16 to allow the roller to slip as the towel roll increases in diameter. The supply of towelling may be folded in zig-zag form and withdrawn as required from the bottom. In a modification, the supply roller 106 and the feed rollers 107, 108 are mounted as shown in Fig. 7, and pressure rollers 109, 112 on arms 110, 113 are provided, while spreader arms 117 are adapted to be rotated by a rod 119 to separate the rollers 109 and 112 from the rollers 107 and 108. The driving chain 125 and gears 121 - - 124 are shown at rest in Fig. 9, but on releasing a catch 136, by a coin or manually actuated push-button 137, a spring 135 lifts the connected trip levers 132, 145, Fig. 10, and the finger 133 forces one arm of the pin 131 into the chain 125. Depression of the treadle 126 then moves the rod 130<a> and chain 125 downwards and rotates the gears 121 - - 124 to feed the towelling, and, through the cord 147, to raise the shield 149.
