Abstract
249,318. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co.). March 19, 1925. Thermo electric batteries.-In thermo-electric cells of the kind comprising metal strips mounted on an insulating base and making contact at a number of points, the strips are formed by spraying the metal on to the base. This may be done by first covering the base 1 with a sheet of material having openings corresponding to the strips 3 and spraying one of the metals through the openings and then removing the sheet and substituting a second sheet corresponding to the strips 4 and repeating the spraying process. A number of the completed elements may be assembled on edge in a container having a resistance element in the bottom, the upper edges of the plates being exposed to the atmosphere. Another method of making the complete thermo-element consists in winding round the base a spiral of protective material leaving narrow spaces between the convolutions. Two different metals are then sprayed on the opposite sides of the base, the metals overlapping at the edges. The protective material is then removed. Another method consists in forming the base with a spiral groove and spraying two different metals over the whole of each face of the base. Both faces are then ground down to remove the metal outside the grooves. The base may be of asbestos and may be covered with an oily substance on those portions to which the sprayed metal is not required to adhere.
