Abstract
249,067. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. March 14, 1925, [Convention date]. Filaments.-Metals of the first undergroup of the fourth column of the periodic system are precipitated on an incandescent body, e.g. a lamp filament, by beating the body in an atmosphere containing one or more iodides of the metal to be precipitated. A vessel 1 containing a wire 2 of tungsten to serve as the incandescent body is electrically connected to leading-in wires 3, 4 sealed in the vessel. The wire is heated to a suitable temperature and zirconium iodide is introduced into the vessel 1, which has been previously exhausted, and the vessel is heated to a temperature between 400‹ and 600‹ C. The zirconium iodide will be then decomposed and zirconium deposited on the wire 2 when the wire is heated to a temperature above 1400‹ C. A mixture of zirconium and iodine may be introduced in place of zirconium iodide. In a similar manner, hafnium may be deposited. the wire being heated to 1600‹ C. The vessel 1 may in some cases be made of metal, e.g. chrome iron. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 239,235, (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts).
