Abstract
249,045. Davis, F. W. Nov. 27, 1925. Ball and like mills.- Ball or tube mills are provided with air-inlet holes in the cylinder head or in the part of the cylinder wall adjacent the intake for vensilatmg and for driving off the moisture from the materials treated therein. Preferably, the cylinder cover 5, Figs. 4, 5, and 6, is perforated with a number of holes 6, which are covered externally by hoods 7 the openings of which face in the direction of rotation. Or the hoods may be inside the cover. The holes are also covered internally by sloping plates 8 arranged fan-wise and laving their edges bent so that the edges of adjacent plates overlap and afford an indirect passage for the air. The plates 8 slope in the direction of rotation and are secured in position by countersunk bolts 9 and supported on setting-off pieces J.1. The usual segmental plates which protect the cylinder head may be tilted to serve the purpose of the plates 8. In Figs. 1 and 7, the ventilating holes 10 are formed in the cylinder wall 1 near the intake end 2, and hoods 7 and external plates 8 are provided; the plates 8 are similar to the usual stepped lining-plates and may be plane or curved. Means such as a stationary steamjacket or other heating-device may be arranged to cover the air-inlet holes so as to heat the air as it enters the mill. The air drawn in through the holes escapes with the ground materials.
