Abstract
An aircraft ground-handling dolly has a rotatable nose wheel support member 4 that can be rotated about a vertical axis and swung clear of a nose wheel receiving area to enable the nose wheel 9 of an aircraft to be moved into the area and held between the rotatable support member 4 and a fixed support member 3.
Description
Movement of Aircraft This invention relates to the ground movement of aircraft.
The movement of aircraft, especially light aircraft, presents difficulties particularly for individuals and particularly in confined areas such as an aircraft hangar.
It is an object of the present invention to improve the capabilities and mechanical function of a self-propelled device for the ground movement of light aircraft as previously described in my UK Patent, No. GB2248215 B. The Patent basically embodies two chassis components hinged together in a horizontal axis. The first chassis component comprises two drive wheel carrying structures arranged to form a bifurcated configuration, the second chassis component comprises a platform structure to accommodate hydraulic power means incorporating hydraulic pump, batteries, battery charger and electronic speed controller for the drive wheels. Mounted below the platform structure is a castor wheel to facilitate the steering of the self-propelled device.
The two hinged together chassis components are held rigid by hydraulic cylinder means attached to each component. In this configuration the chassis components are parallel to the ground and the wheel lifting mechanism is in the raised position. Two laterally spaced apart rails are pivotally mounted in a raised position in a horizontal axis directly above the hinged horizontal axis of the two chassis components and spaced vertically apart by a measured amount.
The rails lie within and parallel to the drive wheel carrying structures and are supported by freely revolving bearing means mounted within the bifurcated configuration. Close to the hinge area of the two chassis components and within the bifurcated area is a fixed aircraft nose-wheel support member.
The rails extend beyond the drive wheel carrying structures. Mounted on the rails, but able to be slid into a required position and self-locking when under load,is an aircraft nose-wheel support member. When the hydraulic rams are withdrawn the hinged area of the two chassis components are lowered, this action also lowers the rails which carry the aircraft nose-wheel support member.
This invention relates to a double hinged extension on one of the rails to allow the removal of the wheel support from the confines of the bifurcated area without being completely detached. This facility allows the wheel support to be rotated about a vertical axis and swung clear of the bifurcated area to allow access of an aircraft nose-wheel. In the aforementioned patent the movable wheel support could be completely removed.
At the end of the double hinge is a plate secured at right angles and extending beyond the width of the hinge to form a stop, which prohibits the removal of the movable wheel support from the rail.
The movable wheel support is fitted with two small castor wheels which take the weight of the movable wheel support when swung clear of the bifurcated area and facilitates easy rotation about the vertical axis of the double hinge. To ensure the correct level of the cranked rails when in the lowered position, which allows the smooth removal of the movable wheel support from the bifurcated area, an adjustable micro switch is mounted on one of the chassis components which carry one of the drive wheels and is aligned with one of the rails. The micro switch is linked to the hydraulic pump, when the rail makes contact with the micro switch the lowering action is automatically stopped in the optimum pre-adjusted position and is ready for the removal of the wheel support from the bifurcated area. The movable wheel support is able to be slid on the rails by means of short rectangular tube sections of which the rails pass through. The tube sections have two diagonally opposite pins which lock on the rail when a rotational force is applied to the aircraft wheel lifting member.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which Fig. 1. Is a plan view of an inventive aircraft moving vehicle showing 1. First chassis component. 2. Second chassis component. 3. Fixed, aircraft nose-wheel support member. 4. movable, nose-wheel support member. 5. rails.
6. Hydraulic cylinders. 7. Double hinge with end stop. 8. Castors.
Fig. 2. Is a plan view of the vehicle showing the movable wheel support. 4.
Moved clear of the bifurcated area and on to the double hinge assembly. 7.
Fig. 3. Is a plan view of the vehicle showing the movable wheel support.
4.swung through 180 degrees and clear of the bifurcated area.
Fig. 4. Shows an aircraft nose-wheel. 9. Ready to enter the bifurcated area.
Fig. 5. Shows an aircraft nose-wheel located on the fixed wheel support 3.and the movable wheel support. 4.
Fig. 6. Shows a side view of the aircraft moving vehicle with aircraft nose-wheel. 9. Held securely between the fixed and self locking movable wheel supports. 3.and 4. When the hydraulic rams are extended this operation raises the aircraft nose-wheel clear of the ground and the vehicle is ready to manoeuvre the aircraft.
Claims (4)
