Abstract

An activity support suitable for use by wheelchair users comprises a hollow base 2 and a top section 3, both preferably formed as single moulded units, wherein the hollow base has a floor and walls arranged to contain ballast, e.g. sand or water, with one of the walls being shaped to at least partially accommodate a wheelchair, and wherein the top section 3 is shaped to fit on and be supported by the base 2 and is able to support material or articles, e.g. soil 6 or a computer. The hollow base 2 preferably has a U-shaped lower portion and an upper portion. The top section 3 preferably has walls, a floor and a lip 303, each having a complementary shape to the upper portion of the base. The walls of the top section 3 fit tightly inside the outer walls of the base, with the lip 303 of the top section overlapping the top of the outer walls of the base. The base 2 may be filled with water 5 or sand which is used as ballast for the activity support. The top section 3 of the activity support may be filled with soil 6 to be used by an occupant in a wheelchair for gardening or may contain office material such as a computer. Wicking means [20, Figure 6] may allow water to be transferred from the base to the soil in the top portion. If used for gardening, multiple article supports may be interconnected by a system of pipes.

Description

Activity Suppori The present invention relates to a support for material to be used in an activity in particular, but not exclusively, by a disabled person.
A disabled person confined to a wheelchair can find activities such as gardening difficult due to the restricted movement. Other people also have difficulty in bending for gardening.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved support for wheelchair activity.
According to the invention there is provided an activity support comprising: * a hollow base having; * a floor and walls arranged to contain ballast and * a concavity in one wall for at least partially accommodating a wheelchair; and * a top, shaped complementarily with the walls of the base for support of the top and support by it of material to be used in it by an occupant of the wheelchair
S
in an activity. r 20
Whilst it is envisaged that the base may include means for connecting it to * * other such bases in various configurations, in the preferred embodiment the activity support can be an independent unit.
S S.,.
Preferably the ballast contained in the supporting base is water, for use of the activity support in gardening. Conveniently, a wick may be fitted between the top and the water in the base to provide irrigation, through capillary action, to soil supported by the top. The water level of the system can be maintained by a standard ball-cock arrangement. For several activity supports in use together, their neighbouring bases can be interconnected and the one furthest from the ball-cock can be provided with an overflow.
To help understanding of the invention, a specific embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 115 a rear view of the activity support; Figure 2 is a cut away view of the activity support along line C; Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2, with the activity support accommodating a person in a wheelchair; Figure 4 is a top down view of the activity support; and Figure 5 is an underside view of the activity support. I0
RefetTing to the drawings, the activity support 1 is comprised of a hollow base 2 and a top section 3.
The hollow base 2 has a U-shaped lower portion 201 with walls 202 and a is floor 203 which follow the U-shape, and a top part 204 covering the concave recess 205 of the U-shape. An upper portion 206 of the base has four walls 207, three of which are continuations of the outer walls of the lower portion 201; a fourth side shallow wall 208 extends above the concave recess. Opposite side walls are slightly convergent, whereby a plurality of them can be juxtaposed in a circular arrangement.
The side having the recess is slightly concavely curved to match such circular arrangement and the outer side is similarly convexly curved. The base 2 is fornied as * a single moulding, typically a vacuumlpressure or an injection moulding of thermoplastics material. It can also be of glass reinforced plastics material.
I
The base has a width W of 890mm a minimum breadth l3-Bmin on the side 1*111 * having the recess of 1070mm, a maximum breadth B-Bmax on the side opposite the recess of 1380mm and a height H of 900mm. The height H is near to that of the average working height of an occupant in a wheelchair 4. The concave recess 205 has a breadth B-R of 660mm. The top part 204 of the lower portion of the base has two tiers 209 and 210 for the accommodation of the legs of an occupant in a wheelchair and two arches 211, at opposite ends of the breadth of the recess B-R, for the partial accommodation of the arms of a wheelchair. Accordingly, the lower tier has a height H-L of 580mm and a width W-L of 660mm; the higher tier has a height H-H of 700mm and a width W-H of 400mm; and the arches have a height H-A of 780mm, a width W-A of 170mm and each have a breadth B-A of 140mm.
The top section 3 of the activity support has walls 301, a floor 302 and a lip 303, each having a complementary shape to that of the base. The top section 3 is formed as a single niouldcd unit.
The floor 302 of the top section has a width W-T of 880mm, a minimum breadth E3-Tmin of 1060mm and a maximum breadth B-Tmax of 1370mm. Three of io the walls 301 have a height H-T of 300mm and the height of the wall on the sidc of the recess is complementary to the recess.
The walls 301 of the top section 3 fit tightly inside the outer walls of the base, with the lip 303 of the top section overlapping the top of the outer walls of the base.
is The top section 3 is supported at the lip 303 by the outer walls of the base and across the floor 302 by a portion of the top part 204 of the lower portion of the base.
The base 2 is filled with water 5 which is used as ballast for the activity *°. support. The top section 3 of the activity support is filled with soil 6 to be used by an occupant in a wheelchair 11 for gardening. es 0
. .: Referring to Figure 6, an alternative embodiment of the activity support has a porous, fabric wick 20 for irrigation of soil 6 in the top by water 5 in the base through capillary action along the wick. The wick 20 extends from the water 5 through a hole S...
in the top section 3 and into the soil 6. The wick 20 is then held in position by friction *.. ..* * from the soil. A water inlet pipe 22 passes through a hole in the base 2 and supplies a ball cock valve 21 with water from outside of the activity support. The ball cock valve 21 maintains the water level in the base at a normal operating level by releasing water from the inlet pipe into the base when the water drops below the normal level.
An overflow pipe 23 passes through an outer side wall in the base above the normal level of the water and below the base of the top section 3.
The invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above described embodiment. For instance, the activity support may be used for support of office material such as a personal computer, and the ballast contained within the base may be sand or any another such materiaL 0 0 * 0 * ** * ** S ** * S *0 * * S S * 0S S...
