Abstract

A portable accessory such as an umbrella 1 or walking stick, with a handle 2 and an elongate body 3 extending from the handle, comprising a GNSS-enabled, global navigation satellite systems, mobile wireless communication device for sending security data to a remote station, a memory for identification data uniquely identifying a user of the accessory, and a manual actuator 12 arranged in the handle to allow the user, whilst holding the handle, to actuate the communication device to send a security message containing the identification data and location data obtained from a GNSS to the remote station. The umbrella also includes a reinforced canopy 4, comprising at least one compressed gas container 34 and actuable by a person whilst holding the handle to cause the compressed gas to be released to drive open the canopy and to be emitted from the umbrella as a jet away from the handle. The gas canister may also contain fluorescent marker particles.
