Abstract

A hinge for a door such as a conservatory comprises a first part 12 with rear surface 20 for positioning against a frame. A hinge pin 26 extends from the first part to which a second part 14 is pivotally mounted. A central axis of the pivot 26 is spaced at least 30mm from the rear surface 20 and co-operating locking means are provided for locking the first part to the second part in at least one open position. The locking means may be a projection 28 on hinge pin 26 which cooperates with axially movable collar 36; alternatively a recessed pocket in pin 26 may cooperate with an axially moving protrusion on the second part14. The hinge lock may be biased into the open position and provided with a button for operation. Indexing detents 32 may be provided for locating the hinge at predetermined positions. Spacing the hinge pin from the mounting surface enables the door clearance of the frame and achieve greater than 90 degree opening.

Description

TITLE: HINGE The present invention relates to a hinge and particularly hut not exclusively to a hinge for conservatory doors.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Most conservatories have a pair of doors which open outwardly onto, for example, a patio area. Often, particularly with a plastics conservatory, the doors are hinged to a door frame using face mounted hinges which screw to the outside of the frame and outside surface of the door. The typical construction of a conservatory includes a dwarf wall onto which the window frames of the conservatory sit. A window sill generally extends around the upper edge of the dwarf wall, and bridges the transition between the top of the wall and the underside of the window frames. This sill typically extends beyond the dwarf wall by around 20mm, but it can extend more or less, depending on the design and style of the conservatory.
The conservatory doors arc typically positioned in a gap in the dwarf wall and the door frame abuts and is connected to the adjacent window frame. When each door opens outwardly, the door can generally easily swing through an angle of 90 degrees and sometimes a further 10 or 20 degrees, but then usually is prevented from opening further back against the dwarf wall of the conservatory, because it is obstructed by the sill. Often a stay arm is attached to the wall, which can be engaged with the door to retain it in its fully open position. However this fully open position at least partially obstructs the door threshold, can be dangerous, for example, for young children, and may look unsightly. Furthermore, the width of the door aperture is effectively reduced for carrying objects, such as conservatory furniture through thc doors.
it is an object of the invention to provide a hinge, particularly but not exclusively for conservatory doors, which reduces or substantially mitigates these problems.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
According to the present invention there is provided a hinge for a door comprising a first part for attaching to a frame and a second part pivotally mounted to the first part for attaching to a door, the first part having a body with a rear surface for positioning against an outer face of the frame, a pivot extending vertically from the body, a central axis of the pivot being spaced at least 30mm from the rear surface and co-operating locking means provided on the first and second parts for locking the first part to the second part in at least one open position.
The spacing of the pivot or hinge pin from the rear surface of the body member enables a door to swing to an open position on the hinge through 180 degrees, to a position approximately 50-60mm displaced from the front surface of the door frame.
This increases the likelihood of the door clearing a sill on an adjacent dwarf wall.
The central axis of the pivot may be spaced from the rear surface between 30mm and 80mm. This allows for a displacement of around 150 to 160mm from the face of a door frame, when the door is in an open position, allowing for a larger sill to he cleared. Advantageously, by use of the hinge, a conservatory door can be opened flat back against a conservatory wall in most domestic and commercial arrangements.
The hinge can also be used for other doors as desired, where obstruction(s) close to the door frame need to be avoided.
The locking means may include a projection disposed on the end of the pivot, and an axially movable collar aligned with the pivot and located on the second part, the collar being movable between an unlocked position and a locked position.
Alternatively, the locking means may include a recess in the end of the pivot, and an axially movable pin disposed on the second part, the pin being movable between an unlocked position and a locked position.
The locking means may be biased towards the open position by a spring and may be push-button operated.
The locking means enables the hinge to be locked in an open position and hence a stay arm is not required. Furthermore, the locking means can be actuated between a locked and unlocked position easily, at the press of a button.
The pivot may extend from one end of the body and a fastening plate may extend from the other end of the body. The fastening plate may have apertures for receiving screw fixings for attaching the plate to a door frame.
At least a portion of the second part may overlie the first part in the closed position and conceal the apertures in the fastening plate. This prevents the hinge from being removed by unscrewing the first part, when the door is in the closed position.
Co-operating locating means may be provided on the first and second parts, for facilitating positioning of the first part relative to the second part in at least one IS predetermined position.
A detent may be provided on the first part and a recess is provided on the second part, the detent engaging in the recess when the door is in the open position, having moved through substantially 90 degrees from the closed position.
A second detent may be provided on the first part and a second recess is provided on the second part, the second detent engaging in the second recess when the door is in the open position, having moved through substantially 180 degrees from the closed position.
The first and second detents may be disposed at the base of the pivot, at its periphery.
The first and second detents may be substantially V-shaped in cross section and may extend radially from the central axis of the pivot.
The locating means are radially arranged around the pivot to correspond with the angular position of the locking means. In this way, the position of the hinge can easily be set for engagement of the push button lock.
At least one locating pin may extend from the rear surface of the body. The locating pin may be pushed into a pre-drilled aperture in a door frame for ease of location of the hinge.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a schematic exploded perspective view of a hinge; Figure 2 shows a schematic perspective view of the hinge of Figure 1 in the closed position; Figure 3 shows a schematic perspective view of the hinge of Figure 1 in the open position; and Figure 4 shows an alternative schematic perspective view the hinge of Figure l in the open position.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT(S)
Referring firstly to Figure 1 a hinge is indicated generally at 10. The hinge 10 is intended for use particularly with conservatory doors and is intended to be face mounted. The hinge 10 comprises a first part 12 and a second part 14 pivotally mounted to the first part. The first part includes a substantially rectangular body portion 16 and a fastening plate 18 extending from one end of the body portion 16 and integrally formed therewith. The fastening plate 18 is at the left hand end of the body portion 16, as viewed in Figure 1. A rear surface 20 of the fastening plate 18 and body portion 16 are adapted to he placed against and attached to an outside face of a door frame. A pair of location pins 22 extends from the rear surface 20 for location in apertures, which may he pre-drilled in the door frame. Apertures 24, three of which are shown, are provided through the fastening plate 18 for attaching the hinge 10 to the doorframe with screw fixings.
A pivot 26 extends vertically upwards from the other end of the body portion 16. The central axis of the pivot 26 is positioned at least 30 mm from the rear surface 20, and may be positioned up to 80 mm from the rear surface 20 depending on the size of sill that the door attached to the hinge has to clear. In other words, the hinge 10 may be manufactured in different sizes. A square projection 28 is disposed at the end of the pivot 26 and is axially aligned therewith, and serves as part of a lock, as will be described further below. A circumferential flange or step 30 is disposed around the base of the pivot 26 and a pair of detents 32, 34 are disposed on the flange 30. The detents 32, 34 are disposed at 90 degrees relative to one another. The detents 32, 34 may engage in a recess in the underside of the second part 14, for the purpose of locating the second part 14 in a desired rotational position relative to the first part 12.
Referring also to figures 2 to 4, the second part 14 is substantially h-shaped but is curved on the inside edge of the L-shape. The material in the curve reinforces the second part 14 and helps to reduce the risk of stress cracking. A substantially circular aperture is provided in one end of the second part 14, which is adapted to engage with an interference fit on the pivot 26. A push button 36 is mounted in the end of the aperture and is formed as a slideable collar with a square cut-out at its lower end. The square cut-out locates on the square projection 28 and when engaged prevents rotation of the second part 14 relative to the first part 12. The push button or collar 36 is prevented from rotation relative to the second part 14 by means of at least one tongue which slides within a slot. As can be seen, particularly from Figure 1, the detents 32, 34 are aligned radially with the central axis of the pivot 26 and the position of the detents corresponds with the angular position of the sides of the square projection 28.
in use, the first part 12 of the hinge 10 screws to an outer facing surface of a door frame using screw fixings extending through the apertures 24 in the fastening plate 18. The second part 14 is attached to a door suitable for the door frame, again by screw fixings which may pass through slots 38, best seen in Figures 2 and 4, which are concealed in the rear of the second part 14. The circular aperture in the second part is lowered onto the pivot 26 and the door is able to pivot on the hinge 10 in usual manner. When the hinge is in the position as shown in Figure 2, the door is in the closed position. When the door opens through substantially 90 degrees, then the recess in the underside of the second part 14 locates on the first of the detents 34 and the door may come to rest. In this position, if the push button 36 is actuated, then the aperture in the push button sits on the square projection 28 and locks the second part relative to the first part with the door in the open position.
If it is desired to open the door further, then the push button 36 can be depressed again, which releases the collar from the projection 28 since the push button is spring loaded to the return position. The door can be moved through a further 90 degrees until the hinge is in the position as shown in Figures 3 and 4. In this position, the second part 14 has moved through approximately 180 degrees and the recess in the underside of the second part locates on the detent 32. As with the previous position, the push button 36 may now be depressed to engage the collar over the projection 28.
This serves to lock the second part 14 relative to the first part 12. Release of the collar is achieved, again by depression of the push button.
It will be appreciated that because of the distance of the central axis of the pivot 26 from the rear surface 20, that when the hinge is in the fully open position as shown in Figures 3 and 4, then the door attached to the second part 14 of the hinge will be approximately double the distance that the central axis of the pivot 26 is away from the rear surface 20. Given that the hinge can be made, for example with this gap up to mm, it will be appreciated that the door can be swung at least around 150 to 160 mm from the face of the door frame. This is usually sufficient to allow the door to open to the fully open position as shown in Figures 3 and 4, without fouling the sill of a conservatoty. Furthermore, the detents 32, 34 allow the hinge to be easily located in the open positions prior to actuation of the push button 36 for locking the second and first parts together.
in an alternative embodiment of the invention, a square aperture may he provided in the end of the pivot and the push button may comprise a square projection. it will also be appreciated that the shape of the projection could be changed, for example for an octagon or a star shape or other suitable shaped projection and recess.
The hinge is highly advantageous for use in conservatories, particularly plastics conservatories where there is a sill provided on a dwarf wall which prevents the opening of a standard door and hinge combination. However, it will be appreciated that the hinge can be used with any door, such as for example, IJPVC and aluminium outward opening doom.
