Abstract
An overhead door, such as an up and over garage door, having a multipoint locking arrangement comprising an actuator, preferably a rotating handle 3 and rotating disc 6, coupled with a drive rod 7 connected to an elongate bar 13 preferably running parallel and adjacent the upper door edge. The single elongate bar 13 being coupled to multiple locking bolts to simultaneously drive them to locking and unlocking positions at the top of the door. The locking bolts may be spring biased into the extended/locked position.

Description:
The invention relates to an overhead door comprising a door leaf which can be fastened to a door locking device at a plurality of locking points, wherein an actuating unit which can be attached to the door leaf comprises a transmission element for converting a rotational movement into a translational movement, and wherein at least one rod acts on the transmission element.
Locking devices of this type are used on garage doors, in which a single rigid leaf is moved entirely overhead from a vertical closed position into a horizontal open position. In the case of so-called canopy doors, the door leaf is tilted for opening purposes, no guidance on horizontal rails being necessary. During the opening process, the lower door leaf edge swings out of the closed plane and, in the horizontal open position, projects out of the garage opening in a manner forming a type of canopy. One advantage of canopy doors is the small amount of space taken up in the garage interior. Furthermore, no horizontal guide rails need to be installed.
In order to protect against break-ins, multipoint locks are often used on garage doors.
An actuating unit is used to operate elements to which the door leaf can be fixed at a plurality of locking points. The actuating unit generally comprises a rotatable handle, the rotational movement of which is converted by means of a transmission element into translational movements of rods which act eccentrically on the transmission element.
DE 199 19 554 C2 describes a door locking device in which the transmission element used is a disc which is plugged or placed onto the handle shaft. Connected to the dtsc at a radial distance from the axis of rotation are rods which serve for locking the door.
For this, the ends of these locking rods engage in counterbearing devices which are attached to the door frame, the masonry or the ground. The locking rods are moved in translation as the disc rotates. A plurality of locking rods are connected to the disc at different radial distances from the axis of rotation. At each locking point, the locking and unlocking takes place by means of a separate locking rod which runs from the transmission element to the respective locking point, in the case of large doors, long rods are required for this, which increase the intrinsic weight of the door leaf and become increasingly unstable as the length increases.
An overhead door having the features described in the introduction is also known from DE 101 33 877 Al, wherein the door locking device comprises an actuating gear mechanism for two rods running laterally and one rod running downwards. The two lateral rods are coupled to a branching gear mechanism in order to drive two catch rods connected to the branching gear mechanism, of which one catch rod brings about lateral locking and the other catch rod at the top of the door leaf brings about a further locking. In order to lock the two locking points arranged at the upper edge, the two rods running laterally from the actuating gear mechanism must be moved. Due to the multipoint locking at a plurality of locking points distributed around the periphery of the door leaf, a good level of security against break-ins is achieved. However, the door locking device is relatively complicated.
The object of the inventjon is to provide an overhead door which can be locked simultaneously at a plurality of locking points by means of a simple, hghtweight and
stable mechanism.
Proceeding from the features described in the introduction, this object is achieved according to the invention in that via the rod it is possible to move a bar-like component, by which a plurality of catch arrangements can be simultaneously actuated for locking andlor unlocking purposes, wherein the catch arrangements are attached to the upper edge of a door leaf frame.
In the overhead door according to the invention, the number of rods running from the actuating unit to the locking points is reduced. Via just one rod, a plurality of catch arrangements can be actuated simultaneously by the bar-like or bar-shaped component. The mechanism fitted to the inner side of the door leaf is thus lightweight
and stable.
According to the invention, the tip of the rod does not itself engage in counterbearing devices for locking purposes, but rather a plurality of, i.e. at least two, separate catch devices are used. The bar-like component is preferably directly connected to the catch arrangements.
The door locking device is fitted on a door leaf which is formed by a door leaf frame and a door leaf filling. The door leaf frame comprises an upper and a lower edge and two side edges. The bar-like component has a rectilinear longitudinal extension parallel to one edge of the door leaf frame. For locking or unlocking purposes, the component can be moved via the rod and thereby undergoes a parallel displacement relative to said edge. ln order to actuate the catch arrangements, the component is displaced with regard to its position, wherein the distance thereof from the edge changes but the component retains its parallel orientation thereto.
According to the invention, a plurality of catch arrangements are attached to the upper edge of the door leaf frame. The bar-like component is positioned parallel to the upper edge of the door leaf frame. The rod is likewise rectilinear in its longitudinal extension and is preferably arranged at right angles to the bar-like component. The rod thus runs parallel to the side edges of the door leaf frame. In this variant, in the closed state of the door, the bar-like component is oriented horizontally and the rod is oriented vertically relative to the garage floor. The horizontal bar-like component and the vertical rod form a T-shape. For locking or unlocking purposes, the bar-llke component is displaced by the rod parallel to the upper edge of the door leaf frame.
Such a construction is particularly suitable for locking canopy doors, since lateral locking is disadvantageous in the case of canopy doors. By virtue of a configuration with a multipoint lock which has only catch arrangements at the upper edge of the door leaf, there is no need for lateral locking.
The bar-like component may be internally hollow. However, it is preferably made from solid material.
The cross-sections of the bar-like component may have different shapes. By way of example, it is possible to use a round bar or a bar with a square cross-section. In one particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the bar-like component is a flat bar with a rectangular crosssection, the width of the cross-section being a multiple larger than the thickness thereof.
ln the case of the overhead door according to the invention, it is advantageous if the transmission element is designed as a rotatable, preferably circular disc. The rotational movement takes place about an axis perpendicular to the door leaf. On the disc, along the circumference thereof, there is any desired number of points on which the rod can act eccentrically. The rotational movement of the disc is converted into a translational movement of the rod. The greater the distance of the contact point from the axis of rotation, the more pronounced the translational movement.
Particularly suitable for fixing the door leaf in the door frame are catch arrangements which comprise spring-loaded bolts. Each bolt is pushed into a bolt keep by a spring.
The bolts are preferably directly attached to the bar-like component and are pulled back out of the bolt keeps counter to the spring force by a rotation of the handle by means of the mechanism described above. When the handle is released again once the door leaf is closed, the bolts are automatically pushed into the bolt keeps by the springs.
In one particularly advantageous construction, on one bolt, preferably the middle bolt, the rod is attached to one side and the bar-like component is attached to the other side. In another variant, the rod is directly attached to the bar-like component.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description of an example of embodiment with reference to the single figure.
The single figure shows a perspective view, as seen from inside a garage, of an overhead door according to the invention.
An actuating unit I shown in the figure can be attached to a door leaf. Said actuating unit comprises an external handle 2 and an internal handle 3. The two handles 2, 3 are connected to a shaft which runs in a housing 4 of the actuating unit I. The shaft may be formed by a square spindle. A lock cylinder 5 is arranged in the housing 4.
Between the internal handle 3 and the housing 4, a circular disc 6 is attached to the shaft. The disc 6 is a metal cylinder, the thickness of which is a multiple smaller than the radius thereof. When one of the handles 2, 3 is rotated, the rotational movement is transmitted to the disc 6 via the shaft. The disc 6 rotates about an axis perpendicular to the door leaf. For unlocking purposes, the disc 6 rotates in the anticlockwise direction, as seen in relation to the drawing.
A rod 7 acts on the disc 6 eccentrically to the axis of rotation. Said rod runs parallel to the side edges of a door frame. The rod 7 is oriented vertically when the door is closed. At its lower end, the rod 7 is provided with an oval opening 8. Protruding through the opening 8 is a connecting element, for example a screw or a pin, by which the rod 7 and the disc 6 are connected. As the disc 6 rotates, the rod 7 is moved in translation.
At its upper end, the rod 7 has a further oval opening 9. By means of a connecting element 10, for example a screw or a pin, the rod 7 is attached to the rear side (as seen in relation to the drawing) of a bolt 11 of a middle catch arrangement 12. A bar-like component 13 is fixed to the front side of the bolt 11 via the connecting element 10.
In the example of embodiment, the bar-like component 13 is a fiat bar, the width of which is a multiple larger than the thickness thereof and which is rounded at its two ends. The horizontal bar-like component 13 runs parallel to the upper edge 14 of a door leaf frame.
A total of three catch arrangements 12 are attached to the upper edge 14 of the door leaf frame. The bar-like component 13 extends from the left-hand catch arrangement 12 to the right-hand catch arrangement 12. At its two ends, the bar-like component 13 is attached to the bolts 11 of the outer catch arrangements by connecting elements.
When the rod 7 moves in the vertical direction, the bar-like component is displaced parallel to the upper edge 14 of the door leaf frame and simultaneously actuates the bolts 11 of all three catch arrangements 12.
ln order to unlock the door, the disc 6 is rotated in the antic)ockwise direction via one of the handles 2, 3. The rod 7 moves downwards and displaces the bar-like component 13 downwards parallel to the upper edge 14 of the door frame. As a result, the upper tips of the bolts 11 are pulled out of bolt keeps (not shown). When the handle is released again, springs which are placed in the housings of the catch arrangements 12 automatically push the bolts 11 back into the bolt keeps.
Claims (9)
- Claims: 1. Overhead door comprising a door leaf which can be fixed to a door locking device at a plurality of locking points, wherein an actuating unit (1) attached to the door leaf comprises a transmission element (6) for converting a rotational movement into a translational movement, and wherein at least one rod (7) acts on the transmission element (6), characterised in that via the rod (7) it is possible to move a bar-like component (13), by which a plurality of catch arrangements (12) can be simultaneously actuated for locking and/or unlocking purposes, wherein the catch arrangements (12) are attached to the upper edge (14) of a door leaf frame.
- 2. Overhead door according to claim 1, characterised in that the bar-like component (13) is rectilinear in its longitudinal extension and runs parallel to an upper edge (14) of a door leaf frame.
- 3. Overhead door according to claim I or 2, characterised in that the rod (7) is oriented at right angles to the bar-like component (13).
- 4. Overhead door according to one of claims I to 3, characterised in that the transmission element (6) is designed as a disc which is rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the door leaf,
- 5. Overhead door according to one of claims I to 4, characterised in that the rod (7) acts eccentrically on the transmission element (6).
- 6. Overhead door according to one of claims I to 5, characterised in that the catch arrangements (12) comprise spring-loaded bolts (11).
- 7. Overhead door according to claim 6, characterised in that the bolts (11) are attached directly to the bar-like component (13).
- 8. Overhead door according to claim 6 or 7, characterised in that, on one bolt (11), the rod (7) is attached to one side and the bar.4ike component (13) is attached to the other side of said bolt (11).
- 9. Overhead door substantially as herein before described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
