Abstract

247,717. Higgins, E. F. Jan. 14,1925. Mother-of-pearl, artificial.-Pigment such as fish-scales or bronze, aluminium, or silver powder is incorporated in a plastic mass such as pyroxylin, and the heated mixture is forced through a die having a space of extended length and restricted width heated to a higher temperature than the plastic mass itself. The material emerges from the die in thin sheets which are superimposed and consolidated by a pressure of 700-1,200 lb. per square inch at a temperature of 180‹-200‹ F. Variegated effects are obtained by including in the pile of sheets one or more which are differently orientated or have been formed under different temperatures, pressures, or speeds of extrusion. The apparatus described in Specification 243,558 is suitable for carrying out the process.
