Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture cartridge includes perforated housing/casing filled with a CO2 scrubbing medium preferably in the form of a liquid, gel or a loose solid. Preferably the scrubbing medium is either calcium oxide (quicklime), lithium hydroxide, soda lime, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, activated carbon or a mixture. Advantageously the CO2 capture cartridge is located in between a combustion chamber and an exit point to the atmosphere, such as in a flue and reduces CO2 emissions produced by the combustion process. Preferably the CO2 capture cartridge is used in conjunction with a gas, oil or wood burning boiler, water heater or air heater.
Description
Carbon capture cartridge for appliance This patent is for installing, designing, adapting or manufacturing a cartridge; into a gas, oil or wood burning boiler I water heater or air heater (here after referred to as the "appliance").
The cartridge (Fig. 1; Fig. 4 point 2) with the substance (Fig. 1 point 2) that will react with the C02 in the products of combustion temporarily or permanently binding to it, therefore removing part or all of the C02 from the flue gases. The cartridge can be located anywhere between the combustion chamber and the point of final release of the treated gasses into the atmosphere (flue).
Definition of "cartridge": A removable object or objects that can be replaced or swapped, made from any substance (metal, Plastic, rubber, wood) containing a C02 scrubbing medium of any shape or form.
Located anywhere between the combustion chamber and the final point where the products of combustion are expelled into the atmosphere.
The cartridge has a means of being connected to the cap or seal that will seal the products of combustion from the outside air (an example depicted on the right of picture Fig. 1) This dome shape can be one solid connector or several smaller ones of various shapes. The cap or seal (Fig 4. point 1) connected, maintains the integrity / seal of the flue, making it safe to use for the occupants of the property.
The C02 scrubbing substance / medium (Fig 1 point 2, Fig 2 point 2, Fig 3 point 2) can be liquid, gel,a solid, either loose or contained in a cartridge. The substance can be shaped, moulded, pressed, milled, coloured, deodorised in the form of granules, gel, liquid, porous or powdered. The C02 scrubbing medium can also be embedded / mixed with / or coated on or in a secondary compound, metal, plastic to enhance structural integrity and durability, therefore prolong the life of the cartridge.
A good example of such a substance that could be used (Fig 1 point 2, Fig 2 point 2, Fig 3 point 2), would be calcium oxide (jckliie) which, when reacted with C02, forms limestone. This forms a permanent bond, trapping the C02 in the cartridge. The C02 can be recovered from the cartridge by heating the newly formed limestone to very high temperatures. The recovered C02 can be stored or disposed off by other means that does not release it into the atmosphere. Other than calcium oxide (quicklime), substances like lithium hydroxide, soda lime, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or activated carbon can be used inside the cartridge to capture C02.
The cartridge with the scrubbing substance is placed in the flue way to extract part or all of the C02 produced by the combustion process, therefore reducing the appliance's CO2 footprint and cutting back on pollution. The cartridge's housing / casing is made from perforated metal or plastic and the shell (Fig 1 point 1,3: Fig 2 point 1.3: Fig 3 point 1,3), filled with the C02 scrubbing substance (Fig 1 point 2: Fig 2 point 2: Fig 3 point 2) bonds with C02 temporarily or permanently. When the gas appliance via convection or fan assisted draft, pushes the products of combustion over or through the substance, the C02 is removed and bonded to the scrubbing substance.
C02 scrubber as a liquid: The liquid can be pumped, dripped or sprayed into or through the products of combustion coming from the burner before, during or after it enters the flue. It binds with the C02 and therefore extracts and treats the products of combustion before they enter the atmosphere.
The liquid can also be stored in a cartridge form or in bottle or bucket or cup like containers.
C02 scrubber as a gel: The gel can be contained in a cartridge (Fig 1 point 2: Fig 2 point 2: Fig 3 point 2: Fig 6 to Fig 10), loose in the flue way, placing it in contact with the products of combustion released from the burner compartment before, during or after it enters the flue.
C02 scrubber as a solid: The solid can be shaped into granules of different forms, e.g. balls, triangles, rectangles, squares, powder, hollow or solid rods, (Fig 1 point 2: Fig 2 point 2: Fig 6 to Fig 10) The cartridge housing / casing might have holes / dimples / slots /cavities or other abnormalities in order to increase reaction zone and decrease drag of air being blown over or through with substance in the cartridge.
Upon saturation; the cartridge can be removed and replaced for a new one, while the old cartridge is sent off for recycling, regeneration or safely disposed of to prevent the C02 from entering the atmosphere. The time between replacements can vary depending on design and frequency of boiler use. quantity of the scrubbing substance inside the cartridge and cartridge size. The cartridge can have a visual indicator to let you know that it's time to change the cartridge, this indicator can indicate a colour change of the scrubbing substance, colour change of another substance on or near the scrubbing substance or even a digital, audio or analog indictor that could be displayed on a screen of the appliance.
An example of the invention will be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Fig 1: Shows a side profile of a round flue cartridge. Point 1 is the outer casing. Point 2 is the C02 scrubbing substance / medium, Point 3 is the inner casing. To the right, the dome shape connector to the cap leaving ample space at the bottom for the products of combustion to be pushed from the appliance through the cartridge into the atmosphere.

Fig 3: Shows the side; cross section profile of a cartridge. Point 1: outer shell. Pont 2: the C02 scrubbing substance / medium. Point 3: inner casing.
Fig 4: Shows a possible configuration of a cylindrical cartridge (point 3) inserted into a concentric flue (point 4) where point 5 is the appliance (wall hung in this case). Point 2 is the spacers, connectors, joining the cartridge to the cap (point 1) without obstructing the products of combustion coming from the appliance, through the cartridge and finally into the atmosphere. The cap / seal (point 1) can be screwed on or clipped into position and maintains the seal between the products of combustion and the air inside the property. The cap / seal may contain a sampling point for combustion analysing tests and maintenance.
The cap I seal can be a screw-out version or have a clipping mechanism to secure the cartridge into the flue and maintain the seal.
Fig 5: Show box version of the C02 scrubbing cartridge fitted in the flue. The box will have a cover with securing screws or clips and a rubber seal to maintain the seal between the products of combustion and the normal atmosphere Left picture shows the open box fitted above appliance with the C02 scrubbing substance showing shaped as flat panels (can be any shape), running vertically, and the right shows the box fitted outside, fitted on an existing flue.
Fig 6 to Fig 10: Shows the possible; cross section. variants of cartridge design and shape/s for a concentric flue anangement.
Fig 6: Cartridge is spaced in the middle of the centre pipe of the concentric flue, by using spacers on three sides (spacers coloured in with black). The cartridge is filled with a C02 scrubbing substance / medium which gets exposed to the products of combustion by means of perforations in the inner (Fig 2 point 3: Fig 3 point 3) and outer casing (Fig 2 point 1: Fig 3 point 1) Fig 7: Shows one solid rod centred in the middle of a concentric flue, made with or covered with the C02 scrubbing substance / medium Fig 8: Shows three solid rods centred in the middle pipe of a concentric flue, made with or covered with the C02 scrubbing substance / medium, Fig 9: Shows a cylindrical cartridge fitting tightly into the middle pipe of a concentric flue, the cartridge is filled with a C02 scrubbing substance / medium which gets exposed to the products of combustion by means of openings in the inner casing (Fig 2 point 3: Fig 3 point 3) The cartridge housing / casing (Fig 1 point 1,3: Fig 2 point 1,3: Fig 3 point 1,3), can be made with grooves or guides running part or the full length of the cartridge to make it impossible to fit the cartridge in the wrong position within the flue and impossible to fit a cartridge designed for a different flue into yours \ :i<i e:1, (fld ?V n: man Thm:r The cartridge can be fitted to existing flue I flues or build, designed or manufactured into new adapted appliances. The cartridge can be made to fit over the existing flue, funneling the products of combustion from the current flue termination, through the cartridge and finally expel the products of combustion into the atmosphere. This bolt-on I adapted cartridge can be wall hung or floor standing and be cylindrical or box-shaped and of any size. The cartridge can also be placed between an existing appliance and its current flue; be box-shaped or cylindrical; wall hung or floor standing.
