Coke ovens.-In a vertically-flued coke oven of the kind in which during one heating-period the gases flow upwards in all the flues 16 of a heating- wall, and in the succeeding period flow downwards, a pair of parallel flues 9, 9<a> is provided at the top of each heating-wall for the supply of air, or air and gas, and for the evacuation of the waste gases, these flues being connected to the reversing-device or regenerators by one or more sets of vertical flues 8, 8<a>. In the oven shown, having two pairs of regenerators 7, 7a, 19, 19a associated with each heating-wall, the regenerators 19, 19<a> communicate with the lower ends of all the heating-flues 16 through sole flues 18, 18<a> and ports 17, 17<a>, while the chambers 7, 7a communicate through the vertical flues 8, 8<a> top flues 9, 9<a>, and damper-controlled ports 10, 10<a> with the upper ends of the flues 16. Rich gas burner ports 23, 31 are fitted at the bottoms and tops of the heating-flues, and supply circuits 30, 32 lead to the bottoms and tops of the flues 8, 8<a>. When rich gas is used for firing air is supplied through both flues 18 and 18<a> or 9 and 9<a>, and the temperature in the flues 8 and 8<a> is maintained by supplying gas through the conduits 30 or 32 according to the phase of operation. With lean gas as fuel, air is supplied through the regenerators 7<a> or 19<a>, and gas through the regenerators 7 or 19, and if necessary air or gas may be admitted to the flues 8 and 8<a>. When regenerators are not used the heating flues are connected to longitudinal distributing and collecting flues leading to a reversing- device. The fans 8, 8<a> are situated nearer to the " coke " side of the oven than to the " ram " side.
