Abstract
247,636. Beck, W., and Coombs, E. P. Nov. 8, 1924. Liquid-level pressure gauges; indicating means for; with recording, integrating, and registering apparatus. -Compressed air is admitted to a conduit to balance the heads on either side of a constriction in the conduit and the pressure of the air necessary to do this is measured by a gauge preferably of the bell or diaphragm type. Nozzles or chests 4 are arranged on opposite sides of an opening 2 which can be varied by moving a weir 3 in an open conduit 1 through which liquid is flowing. Pipes 5 lead from the nozzles to a compressed air tank 6 and pipes 7 lead from the nozzles to the interior of bells 10 suspended in liquid in tanks 11 communicating at the bottom. A buoyant balance weight 13 of conoidal shape working in the tank 11 of one of the bells is connected by a cord to the right-hand bell which is also connected to the other bell, the cords passing over pulleys 15 on a gantry 16. In use, the valves 8 are opened to supply air to the nozzles and the heads of liquid on opposite sides of the orifice balanced whereupon the pressures of air within the bells will cause the weight 13 to move up or down and the index 17 to move over a scale 18. The floor of the down stream part of the conduit is higher than the up stream part, while the airdischarge openings in the nozzles are lower than the down stream floor, so that they are always sealed with liquid. In a modification a pointer moved by the balance weight moves over a time driven chart and an incline carried by the weight serves to limit the stroke of a time-controlled pneumatic ram which through rack and ratchet gear drives an integrating mechanism. In a further modification the air under pressure is led to the inside and outside of a bell suspended in a closed tank, the buoyant float being arranged within the bell.
