Abstract
247,456. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Whitte more, Hulbert, Whittemore, & Belknap). July 3, 1925. Cleaning, fluid-pressure processes for.-The supply of cleaning fluid to a boiler cleaner is controlled by the flow of the boiler feed water through the feed-water supply pipe by means of a water-meter B, Fig. 3, one of the dials of which has a spring contact 12 which at first bears against a neutral post 15, but, when a predetermined amount of water has passed, snaps past this post to a post 19, thereby completing an electrical circuit which operates to open a solenoid valve 25, Fig. 1, and admits steam to the blower on one side of the boiler, after which the spring contact is again forced forward to a post 19 to close a second circuit which opens a second solenoid valve 28 and operates the blower on the other side of the boiler. The blower has a head C slidably mounted on a rotating shaft 41, and is projected forwards by the pressure of the cleaning fluid. The nozzles 52 of the blower are inclined at different angles and communicate in turn with a steam port 51 so that different zones of the boiler shell are swept. The shaft 41 is slidably secured in a sleeve 40 of a spurwheel 39, Fig. 6, rotated by a worm 38 driven through a spur-wheel 37 and reduction train E from a turbine 34, Figs. 4 and 5, to which steam is led through a by-pass 32, Fig. 1. The backplate 54 of the shaft 41 is resiliently mounted on springs 55 and a thrust bearing 58 is provided to take up end pressure. In modifications, the blowers with rotatable heads are replaced by blowers oscillated by suitable mechanism, or non- rotating, non-retracting or non-oscillating blowers may be employed. Also any number of blowers can be operated simultaneously or in any preferred sequence.
