Abstract
A method of coupling building units or bricks 20a, 20b is disclosed. Each building unit comprises side walls 21a, 21b which extend between a lower region and an upper region of the respective unit and which define an interior cavity 25a, 25b of the respective unit. The method comprises the steps of: arranging a side wall of a first building unit substantially adjacent a side wall of a second building unit, forming a cut within adjacent side walls, inserting a clip or bracket 10 within the cut that extends within adjacent walls. The clip extends within the cavity of the first building unit and the second building unit to couple the units together. The clip may comprise locking plates 11 and 12.
Description
A Method of Coupling Building Units The present invention relates to a method of coupling building units.
GB2310442 discloses building blocks that are coupled together using clips in constructing walls and the like. The building blocks comprise a plurality of preformed slots which receive the clips. However, the positioning of the slots severely restrict the relative configuration of the building blocks and thus the shape of the wall. Accordingly, there is no flexibility in the design of the build on site.
I have now devised a method of coupling building units which alleviates the above-mentioned problem.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a method of coupling building units, each of the building units comprising side walls which extends between a lower region and an upper region of the respective unit and which define an interior cavity of the respective unit, the method comprising the steps of: arranging a side wall of a first building unit substantially adjacent a side wall of a second building unit, forming a cut within adjacent side walls, inserting a clip within the cut that extends within adjacent walls, such that, the clip extends within the cavity of the first building unit and the second building unit to couple the units together.
The method requires a cut to be formed, with a saw, for example, within side walls of adjacent units on site as required, for receiving a clip. The method thus removes the limitations in the relative positioning of the building units that are associated with building units having preformed cuts and/or slots. Accordingly, the method provides a quick and secure means of securing building units in various configurations and therefore enables buildings having a variety of designs to be constructed.
Preferably, the clip comprises a first locking member and a second locking member that are coupled together by a bridge member.
The method preferably comprises inserting the bridge member of the clip within the cut that extends within adjacent walls, such that, the first locking member extends within the cavity of the first building unit and the second locking member extends within the cavity of the second building unit.
Preferably, the separation of the first locking member and the second locking member substantially corresponds with the combined thickness of the adjacent walls of the first and second building units, such that the first and second locking members extend in contact with the interior side of the side wall through which the bridge member extends.
The first and second locking members preferably extend in substantially parallel planes. Preferably, the bridge member extends in a plane substantially perpendicular to the first and second members. Preferably, the first locking member, the second locking member and the bridge member extend in a plane substantially parallel to a side wall of the building unit.
The building units preferably comprise at least one strengthening member that extends between side walls, within the cavity of the respective unit.
The method preferably comprises forming a cut within the upper region of adjacent side walls to a depth substantially corresponding with half the length of the bridge member, such that when the bridge member is inserted into the cut, a portion of the first and second locking members and bridge member extends above the upper region of the respective units.
The method preferably further comprises forming a cut within the lower region of adjacent side walls of a third and fourth building unit.
Preferably, the portion of the first and second locking members and bridge member that extends above the upper region of the first and second units is used to couple the third and fourth building unit together by inserting the portion of the bridge member that extends above the upper region of the first and second units within the cut formed within the lower region of adjacent side walls of the third and fourth building unit, such that the portion of the first and second locking members extend within the cavity of the third and fourth building units.
The portion of the first and second locking members and bridge member that extends above the upper region of the first and second units is arranged to further couple the third and fourth building unit to the first and second building units. Accordingly, one clip can be arranged to preferably couple four building units together.
Preferably, the method is used to couple building units in constructing a wall, for
example.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip that is used to secure building units together in a method according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a building unit that is used in a method according to an embodiment of the present invention; and, Figure 3 is a perspective view of two building units secured together by a clip using a method according to an embodiment of the present invention; and, Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along tine A-A of figure 3, illustrating the coupling of four building units with a single clip.
Referring to figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a clip 10 and a building unit for constructing a wall or similar (not shown) for example, using the method according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to figure 1 of the drawings, the clip 10 comprises first 11 and second 12 locking plates, which are coupled together via a bridge plate 13. The first and second locking plates 11, 12 are arranged substantially parallel to each other and substantially perpendicular to the bridge plate 13. The first and second locking plates 11, 12 and the bridge plate 13 are substantially rectangular in shape and are configured to form a substantially H-shape. It is envisaged that the clip may be formed as two U-shaped sections and secured together using welds, or by folding regions (not shown) of each clip section over each other, for example, to form the H-shape.
The bridge plate 13 extends along a longitudinal axis of each plate 11, 12 between opposite lateral side edges 14a, 15a of each locking plate 11, 12, substantially at the centre of a lateral axis of each plate 11, 12. In this manner, the bridge plate 13 and opposite longitudinal side edges 14b, 15b of each plate 11, 12 are substantially parallel.
Referring to figure 2 of the drawings, the building unit 20 comprises a first 21 and second 22 pair of side walls, which extend from a lower region 23 of the unit 20 to an upper region 24 of the unit 20, and which are coupled together along side edges thereof to define an interior cavity 25 of the unit 20. The cavity 25 extends from the lower region 23 of the unit to the upper region 24 of the unit 20 and is accessible from the upper 24 and lower region 23. A strengthening wall (not shown) may be further positioned within the cavity 25 and arranged to extend between side walls 21, 22 to strengthen the unit 20.
It is envisaged that the building unit may comprise a pair of strengthening walls arranged substantially parallel to each other and spaced apart within the cavity. The pair of strengthening walls may be spaced apart a distance that substantially corresponds with the thickness of a saw blade, such that upon cutting the block between the pair of strengthening walls, two smaller units are produced. The pair of strengthening walls thus facilitates the creation of smaller units as required when building a wall, for example.
In use, a first and second building unit 20a, 20b are arranged adjacent each other in the desired configuration such that a side wall 21a of the first building unit 20a abuts a side wall 21b of the second building unit 20b, as shown in figure 3. A cut (not shown) is then formed with a saw (not shown) for example, within the abutted side walls 21a, 21b of each unit 20a, 2Db at the upper region 24 thereof. The cut is made to a depth that substantially corresponds with half the length of the bridge plate 13 of a clip 10.
The clip 10 is then used to secure the two building units 20a, 2Db together by inserting the bridge plate 13 of the clip 10 within the cut formed within abutted side walls 21a, 21b, such that the first and second locking plates 11, 12 separately extend within the cavity 25a, 25b of the first and second building units 20a, 20b, respectively. The bridge plate 13 is sized such that its width substantially corresponds to the combined thickness of the abutted walls 21a, 21b. Accordingly, the first and second locking plates 11, 12 extend within the cavity 25a, 25b of the respective building unit 20a, 2Db, in intimate contact with the side wall 21a, 21b through which the bridge plate 13 extends and thus secures the units 20a, 2Db together.
Since the cut formed within abutted side walls 21a, 21b only accommodates half the length of the bridge plate 13, as shown in figure 3, a portion of the bridge plate 13 and thus a portion of the first and second locking plates 11, 12, extend above the upper region of the first and second building units 20a, 2Db and can be used to couple with a third and fourth building unit 20c, 20d, as shown in figure 4. This is achieved by forming a cut within abutted side walls of the third and fourth building units 21c, 21d at the lower region thereof, such that the portion of the bridge section 13 that extends above the first and second building units 20a, 2Db can be received in the cut formed within side walls 21 c, 21 d at the lower region of the third and fourth building units 20c, 20d. In this manner, four building units 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d can be coupled using one clip 10.
The method disclosed above can be extended to couple further building units in constructing a wall or similar, for example, by forming additional cuts in further side walls for receiving further clips. From the foregoing therefore, it is evident that the method according to the above described embodiment of the present invention enables building units to be readily and securely coupled on site in a variety of configurations.
