Abstract

246,847. Bethlehem Steel Co., (Assignees of Nieman, H. W.). Jan. 28, 1925, [Convention date]. Reversing-gearing; clutches, friction.-Means for repeating in a power-driven element the rotation in either direction of a manually-controlled element comprises a driven shaft, a power shaft, two members driven thereby in opposite directions, a constant-pressure friction coupling between one member and the driven shaft, a variable-pressure friction clutch between the other member and the shaft, and a coaxial manually-driven element so connected to control means for the clutch as to disturb the normal equality of slip between the two members and the shaft to cause it to rotate in the same direction as the manually-driven element. A power shaft 10 drives oppositely, through pinions 12 .. 14 and worms 15', 16', worm-wheels 18, 19 loose on the driven shaft 17. The wheel 18, under adjustable axial spring pressure, and a disc 20 fast on the shaft 17, together with an interposed cork or other friction disc 21, constitute a slipping coupling, and the wheel 19 is connected to the shaft 17 by a compound band clutch normally exerting the same slip resistance as the coupling 18, 20, so that the shaft remains stationary. A primary contracting-band 32 surrounding the hub 25 of the wheel 19 is connected at one end to an arm 34 on a rotatable control element 35 and at the other end 28<1>, through a lever 28, to one end 40 of an expanding band 26 coacting with the interior of the wheel. The other end is secured to a pin 31, this pin and the pivot 29 of lever 28 being carried by a disc 30 fast on the shaft 17, through a slot in which disc passes the arm 34. On manually turning the spindle 35, either directly or by remote control, in a direct ion to tighten the band 32, the effort is multiplied in the band 26, and the shaft 17 rotated in the same direction as the spindle so long as its rotation is continued. On turning it to slacken the bands 32, 26, the coupling 18, 20 predominates, and the shaft 17 again follows the part 35. On ceasing to drive, equilibrium is automatically restored. The bands 32, 26 are faced with cork &c. 33, 27, and the band 32 is of lighter section than the band 26. The bands may further taper from end to end in width or thickness or both. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also the replacement of the constant-pressure friction coupling and its driving-member by any constant-torque means, such as a magnetic field, spring, weight, or normal torque-load on the driven shaft. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
