Description
A JUKEBOX AND AN INTERACTIVE NETWORK INCLUDING SUCH A
JUKEBOX
The present invention relates to a jukebox. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to a jukebox comprising a fingerprint scanner and a display means adapted to display an output dependent upon the comparison between a read fingerprint and stored date. In a further aspect the present invention relates to an interactive network. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to an interactive network including a jukebox, a fingerprint scanner and authorisation means for comparing the read fingerprint to stored data.
Jukeboxes are well known. They are typically arranged in public areas such as public houses, night clubs, restaurants etc. Such jukeboxes must handle requests for music from a large number of users who may have a wide range of musical tastes. It can be difficult for a jukebox to display on a single screen a sufficiently wide range of options to be of interest to all potential users. This has led to complex user interfaces when a user must navigate through several layers of an interface before musical tracks in the correct area can be reached. Many users do not have either the time or the inclination to use such complex user interfaces and may lose interest before making a purchase.
The present invention seeks to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art.
In a first aspect the present invention provides a jukebox comprising * * . * ** *:. 25 a fingerprint reader; *: *::* an output signal generator connected to the fingerprint reader adapted to compare * : the output of the fingerprint reader with stored data and to generate an output signal in response thereto; display means connected to the output signal generator and adapted to display the output signal.
Preferably, the jukebox can further comprise data storage means connected to the authentication means.

:: 25 In a further aspect of the invention there is provided an interactive network comprising at least one jukebox comprising a fingerprint reader and a display means; * ****** * I at least one server; and, a network interconnecting the jukebox and server; the interactive network comprising an output signal generator adapted to compare a fingerprint read by the reader with stored data and to generate an output signal related to said comparison; the display means being connected to the output signal generator and being adapted to display the output signal.
The interactive network can further comprising a data storage means connected to the output signal generator.
Preferably, the output signal generator comprises a server portion on the server and a jukebox portion on the jukebox.
Preferably, the interactive network further comprises payment means, preferably a credit card reader.
The present invention will now be described by way of example only, and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows, in schematic form, an embodiment of a jukebox according to the invention; * S.. * I S...
*:*. Figure 2 shows, in schematic form, a customer data object associated with a fingerprint * 25 data object; and *.* *:*::* Figure 3 shows, in schematic form, an embodiment of an interactive network according to *:** the invention.
Shown in figure 1 is a first embodiment of a jukebox I according to the invention. The jukebox I comprises a fingerprint reader 2 for reading at least one fingerprint of a potential user. The fingerprint reader 2 is connected to an output signal generator 3 which is in turn connected to a data storage means 4 (for example a hard disk or flash memory).
The output signal generator 3 is also connected to a display 5.
In use a customer presses a finger against the fingerprint reader 2 of the jukebox I. The fingerprint reader 2 reads the fingerprint and passes it to the output signal generator 3.
This may be done in a variety of ways as is known in the art. For example the fingerprint reader 2 may simply pass an image of the fingerprint to the output signal generator 3. In an alternative embodiment the fingerprint reader 2 may pre-process the image in some way, for example reducing the fingerprint to a set of essential characterising data points.
On receipt of the fingerprint data the output signal generator 3 refers to stored data stored on the data storage means 4. The stored data comprises at least one fingerprint data object 6, as shown in figure 2. The fingerprint data object 6 could be in a variety of forms, for example fingerprint images or data uniquely identifying each fingerprint. Associated with each fingerprint data object 6 is a customer data object 7. The customer data object 7 in this embodiment comprises the name of the customer associated with the fingerprint 8, the customer credit balance 9 and a playlist 10. The playlist 10 comprises tracks recently chosen by the customer and any favourite tracks identified by the customer.
When the output signal generator 3 matches a read fingerprint with a stored fingerprint *. : data object 6 it generates an output signal including at least a portion of the associated *...
customer data object 7. The jukebox display 5 then displays the output signal. * * S
From the customers perspective, after pressing a finger to the fingerprint reader 2 the display 5 of the jukebox I will change to welcome the customer by name. It will also display a customer balance 9 and also the customers favourite tracks 10. The customer data object 7 may also include style data 11 which affects the style of the display, for example background colour, font etc. The use of style sheets which are separate from content is know, particularly on the internet.
The jukebox I further includes a data input means 12 connected to the output signal generator 3. This may be a keyboard or more typically may comprise a touch sensitive screen which overlies the jukebox display 5. The customer selects a track via the data input means 12. The selection is sent to a music player 13. The music player 13 may have the music tracks stored on a further data storage means. In the current embodiment the music player 13 is connected to a network and downloads the tracks when they are requested by the customer. This allows for a much larger selection of tracks to be made available.
The display 5 may also display common elements common to all customers, for example a full catalogue of all available tracks, advertising etc. The jukebox 1 according to the invention further comprises a payment means 14 to enable the customer to increase their credit balance. This could for example be a credit card reader or a slot for receiving coins or notes. The payment means 14 could for example be connected direct to the data storage means 4. In this embodiment it is connected to the output signal generator 3 which in turn updates the stored customer data 7. Typically the output signal generator is a general purpose computer which generates the output signal from the stored data, handles payments and compares the measured fingerprints to the stored fingerprint data objects 6. *.S.
Shown in figure 3 is an embodiment of an interactive network 15 according to the invention. The interactive network 15 comprises a plurality of jukeboxes 1. Each of the jukeboxes 1 is connected to a central server 16 by a network 17. Arranged on the server * 25 16 is a data storage device 4 comprising at least one fingerprint data object 6 and its associated customer data object 7. The interactive network 15 further comprises an output * *. signal generator 3. This comprises a server portion 3a on the server 16 and a jukebox portion 3bon each jukebox 1.
Each jukebox I comprises a fingerprint reader 2. When a customer presses a finger to the fingerprint reader 2 the read fingerprint is passed to the jukebox portion 3b of the output signal generator 3. Fingerprint data is then passed over the network 17 to the server portion 3a. The server portion 3a compares the measured fingerprint data to the stored data and returns a result to the jukebox portion 3b. The jukebox portion 3b converts this to an output signal which is displayed on the jukebox display 5.
Each jukebox I further comprises a data entry means enabling the customer to choose a track. This is then typically downloaded from a server (possibly but not necessarily the same server) across the network 17 and played. Choosing a track also causes the server 16 to update the playlist associated with that customer.
In this embodiment the data storage device 4 is located on a central server 16, Any change in (for example) customer balance or preferences recorded at one jukebox 1 and stored on the central server 16 is reflected wherever the customer signs on to a jukebox 1 on the network 17.
Each ofthejukeboxes 1 of this embodiment includes a payment means 14, for example a credit card reader or a slot for receiving notes or coins. Any payment received is used to update the customer credit balance on the server 16.
The server 16 may also include a web server (not shown). Customers can access their data over the internet and can also top up their balance. In this embodiment each .. : customer can associate a password with their customer data object 7 so that the customer *...
data object 7 can be accessed without the fingerprint reader 2. * * .
* . 25 In an alternative embodiment (not shown) each jukebox 1 includes its own data storage *..
device 4 and each output signal generator 3 is located on an associated jukebox 1. This * can speed up the output signal generation. The server 16 has a central data storage unit 4.
Each jukebox I periodically updates its data storage device 4 to match that on the central server 16.
In the above embodiments the server 16 has been described as a single server 16. The server 16 may be a plurality of servers 16 connected to appear as a single server 16 to the outside world. * S.. * S S S... * S S...
