Abstract

Two decks of playing cards capable of being used to play standard card games are provided with cuts and fold lines such that they are also capable of being folded so as to form a chess set. A first group of cards from each deck include fold lines and cuts which allow the cards, when folded, to each represent a particular chess piece. A second group of cards from each deck include fold lines and cuts which allow opposing ends of each card to be folded, with one folded end of a card defining a tab and the other folded end of the card defining a slot, such that the folded cards may be linked together via the slots and tabs to define the board. The cards of one deck have differently coloured backs to those of the other deck, such that the first group when folded defines two sets of distinguishable chess pieces, and the second group when folded defines two sets of distinguishable coloured surfaces which can be linked in an alternating arrangement to form the board. The cuts may be die-cut or laser-cut.

Description

Playing cards I Chess set This invention relates to a method for cutting and folding 2 decks of Playing cards to make a chess set, after which the pieces can be folded back flat to fit into their original packets.
The Playing cards! Chess set are two standard decks of playing cards each deck includes two jokers. One deck is blue back and the other red. (such sets are traditional and normally used for playing pinochle and canasta and can be used for most card games) All of the cards in the two decks (108 card including all four jokers) have per{orations!cuts that allow each 2-dimentional card to be transformed by folding into the 3D object.
The playing card design pertained to by the claims are the traditional Anglo-American' design but can be used on other styles such as European deck and promotional character decks where characters from film and TV would appear on the face of a playing card to represent various pieces.
In all cases the cut (i.e. a die-cut, laser-cut) must follow the upper outline of the character (King, Queen, Jack) or a predetimied shape, representational of the chess piece based on a sillouette of that shape.
Below is a list of the pieces required to play chess and the playing card it has been made from out of a standard deck. (for the perposes of the playing card cess set design) King = King (1 + spare) Queen = Queen (2) Knight= Jack (2) Bishop = Joker (2) Rook = the two (2) Pawn = suit (pip) in centre of card (found on A*,3,5,9) (8) Tiles = A,3,5,9, Queens and Kings of the opposite coloured suits and 4,6,7,8 and 10 of all four suits (32) Spares (Remaining court cards can be used as spares, IE two queens must be cut for the event of queen ing in a game of chess) *Aces are all small, single pip cards (i.e. Ace of spades which is sometimes oversized will be required to be printed to match the other pips) Figure 1 shows how the chess set looks when constructed. The board is made from 64 tile ards and placed on top are the 32 Figure 2 shows tile card, where the cuts and embosed fold lines are made and how the tile looks when transformed.
Figure 2a shows the outline shape of the playing card with fold lines and cuts.
The semi circle at the top of the card remains pertuding when the top flap is folded. The slot at the bottom of the card (represented by a thick black line in the central to the fold lines) has the same width as the semi circle and when the semi circular tab from another tile card is slotted in to it the two cards a firmly locked together.
Figure 2b shows a single tile card transofmed into a tile with slot on the left and the tab on the right. (the arrows mark where the tabs have been folded) The tile cards fit together in alternating colours in rows of eight.
Figure 3 shows the pawn chess piece, where the cut and embosed fold lines are made and how the piece looks when transformed.
Figure 3a shows a single pawn card with a semi circular cut.
Figure 3b shows a single pawn card transofmed by folding the the top of the card forward. The shape cut into the card remains upright and visible from the front.
Figure 4 shows an exapmple to represent the other chess pieces, where the cut and embosed fold lines are made and how the piece looks when transformed.
Figure 4a shows (as an example) a court card silhouette outline (this represents the upper outline of the main figure from the court card though in another card the image may be different) Figure 4b shows shows a single pawn card transofmed by folding the the top of the card forward. The shape cut into the card remains upright and visible from the front.

Claims (2)

  1. Claims 1. two decks of playing cards, engineered to also be usable as a chess set 2. A chess set according to claim 1 that is made out of 2 decks of playing cards that when not transfoermed in to a chess set can be used to play a standard card game (i.e snap) 3. A chess set according to claim 1 that is made out of 2 decks of playing cards that when transfoermed in to a chess set can be used to play a game of chess 4. A chess set according the claim 1 where playing cards can be changed from one game to another and fold back and return to the original boxes.Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows: Claims 1. A chess set made from two standard decks of playing cards (54 cards including Jokers) maintaining the original appearance of a traditional playing card symbols without the use of any additional symbols printed anywhere on the cards, but modified by a series of specifically placed cuts and embossed fold hinges so that all cards, from both packs can be transformed into three dimensional chess peices or board tiles (as outlined by the invention).
  2. 2. Two decks of playing cards, according to claim 1, that can be used to play either a standard card game (i.e snap) or when transformed in to a 3D chess set can be used to play a game of chess, and afterwards can be returned to the original pack size and placed back into their original boxes.
