The sensing means may be a movement (PIR), audio and/or light sensor (photocell). A timing means may also be provided. There may be wireless communication between the sensing means and the adjustment means. The adjustment means may be retrofitted to existing lighting systems. A processing means may be provided to program the lighting levels or predetermined conditions.
Description
Illumination adjustment device The invention to which this application relates is a device for adjusting the illumination of a location, particularly but not limited to dimmer control.
Dimmer switches for lights are well known, where the illumination level is typically controlled by operation of a rotatably mounted switch to adjust the output from associated lights between a high level and a low level of illumination.
Further rotation or pushing of the switch may cause the power supply to the light to be engaged or disengaged.
This type of dimmer switch conventionally requires a user to manually adjust the illumination level and switch the lights on and off. As such, a lot of energy may be wasted if a user leaves the location with the light left in the illuminated and undimmed condition.
It is further known that systems exist in which a light is switched on from an off condition when a sensor directed at a particular location detects movement. This type of system is commonly used in security lights on the external walls of houses.
However, such systems tend to be either fully on or off, and switching between such extreme states can reduce the lifespan of the lighting element due to the thermal stresses placed thereon.
In addition as such lights are not dimmable they are only useful for a single purpose, and not suitable for supplementary purposes such as low level night lighting.
An aim of the present invention is to provide a device which can be used to adjust the illumination level of a location
V
automatically depending on the activity in the location. A further aim is to provide a lighting system which can be changed between two lighting conditions dependent upon the status of at least one parameter at that instant of time.
In one aspect of the invention, there is provided an illumination system, said system including at least one illumination means and wherein adjustment means are provided for adjusting the illumination output from the illumination means between at least two levels of illumination, and the adjustment means is operated automatically when at least one predetermined condition is detected.
In one embodiment the at least two levels are a relatively high level of illumination and a lower level of illumination. Typically both levels are non-zero selections.
In one embodiment sensing means for detecting the predetermined condition are provided as an integral part of the adjustment device. In a further embodiment the adjustment device is connected to a sensing means provided separately.
In one embodiment, the sensing means includes at least one movement sensor such as a PIR sensor for detecting the presence of a person. Typically timing means are provided for timing how long a predetermined condition lasts and/or the period between detections of the condition.
In one embodiment the condition is movement in a particular location, or lack of movement in the location for a predetermined period.
In one embodiment the user can adjust this setting to suit their particular requirements for the area which is to be illuminated.
Thus an illumination adjustment device can be fitted to illumination means such as lights or luminaires such that when power is supplied to the illumination means, they illuminate the location at a first level. Typically in one mode of operation, when initially switched on, a lower level of illumination is created but when a person enters the detection range of the movement sensor for example, the illumination from the lights is automatically adjusted to illuminate the location at a high level in response.
Typically the transitions between high and low levels of illumination is gradual, through the use of dimmers.
When the user leaves the area, the illumination means are adjusted back to the low level of illumination after a predetermined period of non-sensing of movement to save energy and br extend the life of the illumination means.
Advantageously this ensures that the illumination means operate optimally to provide illumination at a required level when the person enters the area, and switch to a lower level of illumination to save energy when the person leaves the area and the level of illumination required is not as high. Furthermore the invention ensures that lighting is still present for security purposes and also safety purposes in that a person approaching the location can still make out objects and other items even before the higher level of illumination is activated.
In one embodiment, the sensing means includes at least one audio sensor. Typically in this embodiment the condition is sound in a particular location, or lack of sound in the location for a predetermined period.
In one embodiment, the sensing means includes at least one light sensor. Typically in this embodiment the condition is light or darkness in the location for a predetermined period.
In one embodiment switching means are provided to allow a power supply to the light to be engaged or disengaged. In a further embodiment the adjustment device is provided with a standard electrical plug for connection to a conventional electrical mains socket such that the mains switch forms the switching means.
Thus illumination means provided with an adjustment device would have at least three modes of operation: (1) off (power supply disengaged); (2) on/low (power supply engaged, low level illumination; (3) on/high (power supply engaged, high level illumination).
In one embodiment the iow level of illumination is such that the lighting in a particular room, such as a bedroom or hospital ward acts as a nightlight and therefore does not require any additional lighting devices to be used. In this embodiment there may be provided a separate light switch which can allow the night light mode to be selected.
Typically the illumination output ranges from around lO% to 100% of the maximum output of the illumination means, i.e. a negligible or low level suitable for night lighting to full brightness.
In one embodiment the adjustment means comprises analogue dimming fluorescent ballast.
In one embodiment the switching means includes a switch for engaging or disengaging a power supply, and a switch for engaging night mode operation.
Thus for example, when the power switch is on, the illumination level is switched depending on the sensed condition, but when the night mode switch is also on, the light is switched between a smaller illumination band to avoid temporarily blinding a person trying to find the way in the dark due to a high illumination level.
In one embodiment the switch for engaging night mode operation is operable via a light sensor. Typically night mode can thus be engaged when the ambient light level falls to a predetermined low level.
In one embodiment the adjustment device can be retrofitted to illumination means. Typically no additional wiring or programming is required to operate the device.
In one embodiment processing means are provided such that the illumination output levels and/or predetermined conditions can be programmed and/or amended. It will of course be appreciated that the same could be adjusted manually, using dip switches for example.
In one embodiment wireless communication means are provided between the sensing means and the adjustment device. Typically the adjustment device includes a wireless receiver for receiving signals from sensors provided with transmitters.
Typically a computer and/or a remote control device can be used to control the illumination output levels and/or predetermined conditions.
In on embodiment the illumination means, adjustment device and sensing means are provided as in integral light fitting.
In a further aspect of the invention there is provided an illumination adjustment device for illumination means comprising adjustment means for selecting the illumination output of the illumination means from at least two positive levels, wherein the adjustment means is operated when at least one predetermined condition is detected.
In a further aspect of the invention there is provided a light fitting comprising illumination means and an illumination adjustment device as described herein.
Thus the illumination output is adjusted in response to one or more predetermined conditions.
Specific embodiments of the invention are now described wherein:-Figure 1 illustrates an illumination adjustment device according to an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 illustrates an illumination adjustment device according to a further embodiment of the invention.
With reference to Figure 1, there is illustrated an illumination adjustment device 2 connected to illumination means in the form of a luminaire 4 and sensing means in the form of a movement sensor 6.
The luminaire is powered by electricity from a power supply means (not shown) such that when power is supplied thereto, the luminaire outputs light 8 at a low level, of around 10% of its maximum output level or other level set by the adjustment device 2.
However, the adjustment device is configured to adjust the illumination of the location to a high level i.e. the luminaires maximum output level, when a user 14 enters the location 10 and their presence is detected. In such circumstances the movement sensor 6 detects 12 the movement of the user 14 and the location is brightened automatically by luminaire 4 via the adjustment device 2.
When the user 14 leaves the location 10, the lights are adjusted back to the lower level of illumination, after a predetermined period e.g. 20 minutes, to conserve energy.
Thus, there is no requirement for the user to remember to switch the lights off when he leaves the room or other location, as they will be dimmed automatically if there is no movement sensed after a preset period, as would occur if the user had left the room.
With reference to Figure 2, there is illustrated a further illumination adjustment device 2 similar to that illustrated in Figure 1 but instead formed as part of a luminaire 4 with a movement sensor 6.
In addition, this lurninaire is provided with a standard plug 16 for a conventional power socket 18. When the socket switch 20 is activated, power is supplied to the luminaire.
However, the luminaire is provided with a further switch to allow enablement of night mode operation.
Thus for example, when the socket switch 20 is on, the illumination level is switched between a iow level in the absence of movement detection, and a high level when movement is detected, although when the night mode switch 22 is also on the high level is reduced.
This night mode can be used by people to help find their way in the dark, without the temporary blinding effect that would occur if suddenly exposed to a much higher level of light from darkness.
In addition the manual light switch 22 can be replaced with a light sensor that may be directed at the location or exterior thereof, such that night mode is automatically engaged at night or when the ambient light level otherwise falls to a low level.
The provision of automatic lighting may be of particular use in care homes where it is not always easy for an elderly or disabled person to find a light switch in the dark, and indeed, it has the advantage that at night the lighting is at low level to avoid blinding the person or disturbing others.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the present invention may also include further additional modifications made to the device which does not affect the overall functioning of the device.
