Abstract
In covering vertical or horizontal surfaces within a room a covering material 15 is fed into a device from its holding spindle 12 to between the roller 3 and pinch roller 4 and then fed out of the device under the take-off roller 5. The roller 3 is mounted beneath a trough which has a regulator 9. The unseen surface is therefore coated with the coating solution / substance such as paste from the trough and ready for application.
Description
DEVICE FOR APPLYING A COATING TO FLEXIBLE SURFACES
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a device for coating the surfaces of flexible materials.
BACKGROUND
The following method is ideally carried out using TWO operatives.
The existing method of wallpaper I surface pasting is to: 1. Clear a large area around the vicinity to be worked.
2. Protect the surrounding flooring and area from paste or coating material splashes / spillage.
3. Set up a "pasting table" with adequate free space all around to enable the cutting, trimming, folding, coating or pasting of the surfaces.
4. Obtain the necessary tools, Example: Ladders, Pasting brush, scissors, roller, knife, smoothing brush and the like, to enable the operation.
5. Obtain a suitable surface coating solution mixing receptacle, and mixing implement.
6. Mix together the surface coating solution, Example: Wallpaper paste.
7. Take the mixed surface coating solution to the "pasting table" and place in a suitable and convenient position.
8. Measure the area to be covered.
9. Mark out and cut to size the flexible covering material, by rolling it out along the length of the "pasting table" and folding it across at the required size so creasing the material to give a line to cut to.
10. Cut across the folded mark in the material using scissors or the like to give the required size.
11. Reposition the covering material on the "pasting table" so that the unseen I un-patterned surface is uppermost, and by pulling it along the length, so that the top edge of the covering material is inside the area of the "pasting table".
12. Taking great care not to splash or spill the surface coating solution, example "Wallpaper paste", Dip the "pasting brush" into the liquid ensuring that the "pasting brush" is adequately covered.
13. Remove the pasting brush" from the solution and begin covering the un-seen surface with the surface coating solution.
14. Repeat this operation ensuring that the coating solution is applied evenly and entirely over the surface taking great care to cover right up to the side edges.
15. When the length of the covering material's surface is coated, reposition it along the length of the "pasting table". This is done by pulling the material along so that the coated surface is "hanging over" the edge of the "pasting table" leaving the un-coated surface supported by the "pasting table" ready for coating in solution.
16. Coat the remaining length of material in solution as previously described and repeat the previous repositioning operation as No. 15, if necessary, taking great care NOT to allow the coated material to drag or lay on the floor. Also great care should be taken NOT to allow excess solution to become in contact with the patterned or outward shown surface of the covering material.
17. When the entire surface has been coated, the material should be folded and lifted off the "pasting table" in such a way as to enable the coated surface to be pressed against the surface to which it is to be covered.
18. Press the solution coated surface of the covering material squarely onto the surface to be covered using a smoothing brush or the like.
Care to be taken not to "rip" or "tear" the covering material and to smooth flat so not to cause air bubbles.
19. When the surface has been covered trim off any excess or unwanted covering material using a sharp knife or the like.
DISADVANTAGES
1. The large and clear working area that is required.
2. The numerous amount of tools and equipment required.
3. The time, effort and skill required sethng up of upasting table" and equipment.
4. Skill level required in the use of measuring equipment.
5. Two people required.
6. Waste of surface coating solution. On brush, on "pasting table" 7. Storage of "Pasting table".
8. Life span of "Pasting table" The present invention seeks to provide a new and inventive form of flexible surface coating, a device which does not have the above-noted disadvantages and cuts down on the number of operations and operatives to achieve the set objectives.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a method of coating a flexible surface with a liquid substance. This device can be used for applying paste to wallpaper.
The roll of wallpaper is held freely on the device and is fed between rollers. As the paper roll is fed through, wallpaper paste / solution which is stored in a "holding trough" is distributed along on the back surface of the paper.
When the roll emerges from the last roller of the device, the back surface is completely coated in paste / solution, and is presented with the coated surface towards the area to be covered.
The paper can then be pulled out to reach the papering start position and smoothed down along its length onto the covering surface until the entire area to be papered is covered. The operator can then trim the paper off to length, and proceed to the next area.
This operation requires only ONE operator and without the need for additional equipment i.e. "pasting table" "Paste brush" and waste is reduced to a minimum.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The following description and the accompanying drawings referred to therein are included by way of non-limiting example in order to illustrate how the invention may be put into practice. In the drawings: Figure I is a general exploded view of a first form of coating device for coating the surfaces of flexible materials in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a general exploded view of a second form of coating device for coating the surfaces of flexible materials in accordance with the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The coating device which is shown in FIg..l includes a case or housing I which can be of metal or plastic for example. The housing could be rectangular, circular, or of any suitable shape, but in this example the case is generally rectangular. The Trough Ia forms part of the housing I and when positioned with Housing lb becomes complete, together with the Regulator 9.
The base of the Housing Ic supports a removable Drip Tray 10. The whole assembly is strengthened and supported by two sides 2. Which can be of metal or plastic for example.
The Material (driven) Roller 3 which can be of Foam or plastic for example and is mounted beneath the Trough and is secured to the sides 2 by means of fixings 11 into Roller end stops 13. The Pinch (driver) Roller 4 which can be of Foam or plastic for example and is mounted adjacent to Roller 3 and is secured to the sides 2 by means of fixings II into Roller end stops 13. To obtain the upinthn between Roller 3 and Roller 4 a spring 8 is used on either end of the rollers. The Driven Gear 6 and Driver Gear 7 are attached to the rollers 3 and 4 respectively.
The Material Take-Off roller 5 which can be of Foam or plastic for example and is mounted beneath the Pinch Roller 4 and is secured to the sides 2 by means of fixings 11 into Roller end stops 13.
Secured to the Sides are the Material Stands 14 which in turn support the Material spindle 12 both of which can be of metal or plastic for example. The Material roll 15 is supported through the centre by means of the Material spindle 12.
METHOD OF OPERATION to be used in conjunction with FIg.1 1. Mix together the surface coating solution, Example: Wallpaper paste.
2. Pour the mixture into the device Trough Ia 3. Set the mixture RegulatorS to the desired gap 4. Push Spindle 12 through centre of Covering Material roll 15 5. Place assembly onto the Material stand 14 6. Pull back the Pinch Roller 4 so it "drops" into the back loading position.
7. Feed the Material down through the gap between the two top rollers.
8. Pull up the Pinch Roller 4 and release it, so that it springs forward and "pinches" the Material between the Material Roller 3 9. Pull down and up on the Material so that it rolls around the Material take-off Roller 5.
10. Pull up on the Material so that it rolls through the device to the starting edge. Press the solution coated surface of the covering material squarely onto the surface to be covered and smooth down.
11. When the surface has been covered, trim off to length using a sharp knife or the like.
FIg.2 Shows a modified form of dispensing device in which items correspond to those described above in relation to Flg.1 have the same alphanumeric references. In this case the device may be motorised by means of an electric motor 100 or the like, and secured to the side 2 by means of fixings 11, and having a drive shaft 101. The Gear guard 102 is secured to the side 2 by means of fixings 11. A Foot switch 103 is incorporated for actuation of the motor.
Additional useful features can be incorporated into the device without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, a Trimming knife can be added at moderate cost so that the device could trim the covering material to length, therefore becoming a self contained unit.
It will be appreciated that the features disclosed herein may be present in any feasible combination. Whilst the above description lays emphasis on those areas which, in combination, are believed to be new, protection is claimed for any inventive combination of features disclosed herein. -t+.-
