Portable turning-apparatus.- The rotatable part i of the machine is mounted at one end in ball bearings in a frame A, and at the other end on a sleeve f provided with a centring pin g and with clamps h for engagement with the spindle of a car axle. The frame A carries a chuck plate b having on its circumference a gear ring meshing with a pinion a and scrolls c<1> co-operating with jaws c for clamping the frame on the car-axle. The sleeve j is formed with an internal screw-thread for engagement with a, spindle e having a head d which may be turned by hand to advance or retract the centring pin g. The member i, which is provided with two tool-holders w ,adapted to move in guides k by means of screw-threaded spindles u, is rotated by a hand crank t, thereby actuating the spindles u through the medium of a worm s on the sleeve f, a worm wheel y, a pair of spindles z, a pair of worms y<1>, and a pair of worm wheels q. The wheels q are loosely mounted on the spindles u and are operatively and detachably connected thereto by couplings Q provided with handles so that, after cutting operations, the tool supports may be manually actuated to return to their initial positions. The outer ends of the spindles, which are smooth, are surrounded by coil springs x tending to keep the supports w in engagement with the threaded portions of the spindles, whenever the supports have reached their end positions.
