Abstract

A protective fitment 10 (i.e. an eyelet or grommet) for an aperture in sheet metal, preferably a non-circular aperture such as an elongated slot, comprises first and second mutually co-operative components 16,18 of plastics materials. The first component 16 includes a plate element 20 having an opening of dimensions corresponding to the aperture and having a depending skirt 25 for insertion into and through said aperture. The second component 18 includes a plate element 24 having an opening to receive said skirt 25. One of the first or second components 16, 18 has one or more resilient snap-fit fasteners 30 engageable with the other component to secure the two components 16, 18 together.

EDGE PROTECTORS
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
This invention relates to edge protectors and in particular to edge protectors for resisting abrasion of electrical cables passing through elongate slots cut into metal.
Background
It is often necessary for electrical contractors to cut elongate slots in metal trunking so as to permit passage of electrical cables or wires through the slot for connection to electrical fittings or instruments, e.g. electricity meters. Conventionally, to prevent the cut metal boundary or edge of the slot abrading the electric cables passing therethough, the contractor has applied strips of adhesive insulating tape around the cut edge. This is a time consuming activity, the applied tape is of limited durability and its application is often inadequate -especially when the adhesive characteristics break down.
Summary of the Invention
With a view to overcoming or at least minimising these disadvantages, the present invention contemplates a protective fitment for an aperture in sheet metal, preferably a non-circular aperture such as an elongated slot, the fitment comprising first and second mutually co-operative components of plastics material, the first component including a plate element having an aperture of dimensions corresponding to the aperture and having a depending skirt for insertion into and through said aperture, and a second component including a plate element having an aperture to receive said skirt, one of said components having one or more resilient snap-fit fasteners engageable with other component to secure the two components together.
Preferably said snap fit fasteners are provided as limbs extending from the skirt's edge distal from the plate of the first component, the limits having outwardly directed projections to engage the second component at one or more locations about the periphery of the aperture therein.
Brief Description of the Drawings
By way of example one embodiment of this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a two-component protective titment according to the invention in assembled state in situ in an aperture in a metal strip, Figure 2 is a side view of the assembled fitment shown in Figure 1 with the metal strip omitted, Figure 3 is an end view of the assembled fitment shown in Figure 1 with the metal sthp omitted, Figure 4 is an underneath perspective view of the assembled fitment shown in Figure 1 with the metal strip omitted, Figure 5 is a perspective view from below of one of the two components shown in Figures 1 to 4, and Figure 6 is a perspective view of the other of the two components shown in Figures 1 to 4.
Detailed Description of Example(s) of the Invention The illustrated protective fitment 10 is to protect a non-circular aperture 12 in the form of an elongated slot 14 in a strip of sheet metal 15. The fitment 10 comprises first and second mutually co-operative components 16,18 molded of plastics material to be electrically insulative. The first component 16 comprises a plate element 20 having an aperture 22 of dimensions corresponding to the aperture 12 to be protected, the plate element 20 forming a flange to a depending skirt 25 integral with plate element 20 and for insertion fittingly into and through said aperture 12. The second component 18 comprises a plate element 24 that has an aperture 26 of dimensions corresponding to the aperture 12 to be protected and for encompassing the free end portion of the skirt which, in use is received by the aperture 26 in plate element 24. Preferably the plate element 24 is of matching dimensions to plate element 20. In the embodiment shown, the first component 16 is provided with one or more resilient snap-fit fasteners 30 engageable with the second component 18 to secure the two components 16, 18 S together.
For this, the snap fit fasteners 30 are provided as short limbs 32 extending from the skirt 25 at its edge distal from the plate element 20 and such as to engage snap-fittingly the second component 18 at one or more locations about the periphery of the aperture 26 therein.
It will be apparent that an electrician, having cut an elongate slot 12 in a sheet metal strip 14, can then insert therethrough the skirt 25 of component 16 from one side of the metal strip 14, and press that component's plate element 20 into surfacial abutment of said one side of the metal strip 14 whilst passing the limbs 32 through the aperture 26 of the plate element 24 (orming the second component 18) and compressing that plate element 18 into surfacial abutment of the other side of the metal strip 14 thus facilitating snap-fitting engagement of the two components 16,18.
It will be appreciated that other aperture shapes can be catered for by like fitments having openings and skirts of a shape corresponding to that other aperture shape.
A preferred use of the illustrated edge protector is for an elongate slot-like aperture cut in the steel or aluminium conduit used for electrical cables which are to pass from within the conduit out through the aperture and into an electricity meter.
Other modifications and embodiments of the invention, and uses therefor, will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art, and they are to be deemed within the ambit and scope of the invention. In addition, the particular embodiment(s) hereinbefore described may be varied in construction and detail, e.g. interchanging (where 4..
appropriate or desired) different features of each, without departing from the scope of the patent monopoly hereby sought.
