Abstract
A method and apparatus for optimizing power settings of an access point in a communication system includes a first step (300) of initializing an access point by determining power levels of neighbouring cells and in response setting an initial power setting of the access point. A next step (302) includes reducing the power setting of the access point by a transmit safety margin. A next step (304) includes providing at least one subsequent measurement report of power levels of neighbouring cells. A next step (306) includes adjusting the power setting of the access point in response to the at least one subsequent measurement report. A next step (308) includes repeating the providing and adjusting steps until an optimal power setting of the access point is achieved to mitigate interference with surrounding cells.
